The latest, preferred location for airline maintenance? El Salvador.

The Wall Street Journal reports at least two airlines -- Jet Blue and America West -- send their planes to El Salvador for "long distance" maintenance, outsourcing the work to cut costs. Air safety experts are said be concerned that it jeopardizes safety and makes scrutiny by regulatory agencies more difficult.

I once worked for an airline that did this. I don't think it really saved them any money because they usually had to send the aircraft to Temco in the US to fix all of the problems that were caused by the cheap Central American C or D Check.

If I'm not mistaken, TACA has an excellent reputation in this line of work. Just what I've heard. But, there was another thread on this very topic a week or two ago, and some posters had personal experience with the TACA MX operation. If I recall, their comments were favorable.

This message board is supposed to be about helping each other find employment in aviation. Why are you posting threads designed to get fellow pilots angry? FOR ALL OF YOU JB HATERS

This doesn't do anything but foster hatred. Most companies today are global. "Outsourcing" is one of the presse's current buzz words. Look at Airbus, 45% of the A380 is produced in the United States according to one article I read this week. I don't know why we are using a company in El Salvador, but I guarantee we've tested their quality before we started sending our aircraft to TACA. How about we try and help one another and not bash a company which has publically announced we are doubling our hiring starting with the next round of interviews.

We also have some MX done in Winnipeg by Air Canada. The horror!! What will we think of next?

Funny thing is TACA gets the MX done on schedule. Air Canada on the other hand...Not so much.

I am not knocking JB. I like the LCC's. They have brought us reasonable fares and good service. That said, I am reminded of another LCC that contracted it's heavy maintenance to a company called Sabertech.

i am sure the employees appreciate the profit sharing checks if mx is cheaper AND better quality...plenty of fly by night US heavy mx operators here that could be the focus of Nightline or 60 Minute documentaries!

When you have a seventy fleet airline and no place to do the MX, these are your options... However, very shortly (within the next 5-8 months), Jetblue will be opening two maintenance hangars in JFK and MCO. Whether or not heavy MX will occur in these facilities, I don't know... But at least we'll have the space.

Since JB doesn't pay for its their planes, why would they pay for maintenance. It's free in El Salvador. I would bet the fuel is free to get it there.

Most Airlines get Maint done overseas.
We at NWA get heavy checks done all over the globe.

I made the original post a couple of weeks ago after a friend had flown a 320 down to El Salvador. The point was that JB was getting heavy mx done and paying for it.TC

I for one would like to know the brands. I try to buy american as well. Ive got two plymouths in the driveway and Im not sure if they were even made in the usa. let us know so we can buy them.
