What if the owner buys a share in a NJA aircraft that can't make Europe (say, the Beech 400) and now they decide that they absolutely need to go to Europe... will NJA bump them up into the next most capable aircraft to make that flight (say, the X)?


You bet. It's subject to availability, but if there's a plane available, an owner can upgrade to it. (I'm sure there's some conversion factor -- like 1 hour in an Excel buys 0.620186 hours in an X or something... I have no idea what the exact numbers are, though.)

It goes both ways, too. If a Falcon owner only needs a smaller plane for a particular mission, for example, we can do that. That way, he can save some of his share value, rather than wasting it on a 10-passenger plane just to go by himself on a short day trip. While upgrades are subject to availability, downgrades are always available.
 
I can see why people would enjoy fractional ownership over owning their own aircraft. It just makes sense.

I've been down to the islands 3 times in the last two tours. Once included an RON; too bad we got in late in the day and the wx totally sucked, but it was neat none the less. Been down to Cabo in the mighty U-Boat as well.

A NJ sales rep at PBI told me that there are "conversion factors from one fleet to another for an hourly occupied rate". He didn't give specifics on that but when I posed a very similar question to yours, the response was "we would uprade the owner to a larger aircraft or recommend purchasing a Marquis Card for their occasional international needs...".

A lot of owners at NJA will cheat the system. What I mean is if say for example a Citation X owner books a trip to India. Well we all know that although this can be done, the X is not ideally suited for this mission. The owner knows this and is banking on NJA to roll in to town with a GIV or V. The owner plays the card "well I requested my X take me to India, I am not paying for the difference". (before you tell me they are rich and that they wouldn't care about the price difference, read on)

However this sometimes backfires on the owner because there have been cases of "a-team" crew members taking the X to all over the world...

Just luck of the draw my freind. The Nassau trip last tour could have been a good deal but the wx gods conspired against us. We got down there at 2130L, night, rain, 900' overcast, 15 knots crosswind - we were soaked to the bone by the time we had the plane put to bed. More of the same the next day. Oh well, that's the way it goes sometimes.

On my "anniversary flight" on Tuesday the wx was beautiful however. No overnight but a great 3 leg flight: KPBI-TKPK-TAPA-KMIA.

Company recurrent next week for me so maybe scheds will throw you a bone!
