i don't have a copy of the FAR's, so here's my question: i have in my hand a first class certificate that was issued 10/17/2002. i know that first class' expire after 6 mos, but don't they get downgraded to a 2nd class then? if this is so, is my certificate (at 2 1/2 years after being issued) still valid and if so, is it 2nd or 3 class at this point? thanks!

don't have mine either , but I think it's a third now. I could be wrong and have been before

Read 61.23 (c)(1) and Part 67 Subpart B. The Class doesn't change. The standards to which you where examined when you got the 1st Class didn't magically change when that 6 mo. period elapsed. The priveldges for which you may operate using your pilot certificate did.
