The Extended Stay - DTW Airport has a special Kalitta rate of $24.99. They refund all taxes after you have been there 30 nights. They offer van service to/from the training center and they'll also give you a lift to the grocery store or the gym (free access to Lifetime Fitness). It's basically a normal hotel room plus a kitchen. Safe area about a 15 minute drive to the training center, but not much around if you don't have a car.

One thing that is coming up is that the Kalitta Air B747 sim is probably going to get certified this summer. When new hires go through training on it, the company might not pay hotel and per diem - because it is at YIP (your base). However, now when pilots are in YIP for recurrent, we do get hotel and per diem. So it might change - who knows what will happen.

Actually that is not entirely correct. The contract states that if a crewmember lives beyond 60 miles from base, when in base the company will provide perdiem and hotel. That is why the company pays the hotel room cost and perdiem when we are in recurrent ground school at base.
How all this will effect newhires, or while in upgrade training, I don't know. I don't believe newhires are covered under this provision of the contract.

Actually, the section reads...

Per Diem in Base
A crewmember who principle residence is more than sixty (60) miles from his Base will be eligible for Per Diem for all hours beginning when he reports for a flight assignment at his base or is required to be on reserve, other than R-3...

same for Lodging in Base.

So, the company is being nice by providing a hotel and per diem while in recurrent training. They do not provide the hotel while in upgrade training, btw.

Yes I guess your right, though it could be argued that reporting for a flight assignment doesn't neccessarily mean you will fly. Hence the coverage of recurrent training under this provision. I find it hard to believe that as confrontational as the recent talks have gotten, that the company would do anything nice per se. It could also have something to do with the fact that we are forced to do the training on days off, hence, the providing of lodging. Who knows. I think hopefully this will all get addressed during the next contract and we won't have to worry about it.

They have a class starting on Monday- after that, perhaps October or so. Send in your stuff.
