Just wondering if anyone out there has flown with this guy and can help him out. . . .

'Scary' U of M student jailed

Possible terrorism ties under investigation

When FBI agents walked into Mahmoud Maawad's spartan apartment at 3557 Mynders # 5 on Sept. 9, they found a desk, chair, computer and a Koran.

They also found an airline pilot's uniform, a chart of Memphis International Airport, and instructional DVDs, including one called "How an Airline Captain Should Look and Act."

http://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/images/spacers/spacer.gif http://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/images/spacers/spacer.gifhttp://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/images/spacers/spacer.gifA federal magistrate Thursday ordered Maawad, a 29-year-old University of Memphis student from Egypt, jailed until his trial on charges of wire fraud and fraudulent use of a Social Security number.

"The specific facts and circumstances are scary," Asst. U.S. Atty. Steve Parker said, arguing against Maawad's release.

Since Maawad can't get a Social Security number, "he can't get a pilot's license, and can't go to flight school," Parker said. "But he wants to get behind the wheel of an aircraft."

Parker said "we don't know either way" if Maawad is a terrorist or connected to any terror groups.

U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Thomas Anderson ruled that Maawad be held without bond.

Though it's not illegal to buy aviation material, Anderson noted, "it is hard for the court to understand why he has a large concentration of those items, and nothing else to indicate Mr. Maawad plans to stay in the community."

Maawad has been in the country illegally since 1999, and has used a false Social Security number to enroll in schools and open a bank account, Parker said.

He's been working off-the-books for cash at a North Memphis convenience store, and was arrested by Shelby County sheriff's deputies last spring for selling alcohol to a minor.

Agents are downloading information from Maawad's computer and analyzing materials from his apartment in search of a terrorism connection.

"My school is everything," said Maawad, a clean-shaven man built like a weightlifter. "I stay in this country for seven years; I stay for the school."

Maawad said he's studying science and economics at the U of M.

Since Maawad can't work legally, he told authorities a friend would support him.

When court employees tried to reach that friend, the telephone was disconnected.

Between April and August, the penniless student ordered $3,000 in aviation materials, DVDs titled "Ups and Downs of Takeoffs and Landings," "Airplane Talk," "Mental Math for Pilots" and "Mastering GPS Flying," FBI agent Thad Gulczynski testified.

He also ordered a pilot's coat and hat, and a chart of the Memphis airport terminal area from Spotty's USA in San Diego.

When the company didn't receive payment on $2,500 worth of merchandise it had delivered, officials called the FBI, which launched an investigation, Gulczynski said. -- Chris Conley: 529-2595

Think this is tied to the ban on personal jumpseating?

Although in Indy last night, one of the ground crew told us he heard personal jumpseating was off because the pilots are in contract negotiations and won't allow personal jumpseating.

Well, tell him to pass up his chain of command to "Git-R-Done" so he can have his personal jumpseats back!!!

Then, ask him what he's going to spend his profit sharing check on. . . .

Either this guy is a serious idiot to think that his "hobby" wouldn't get him into a lot of hot water with some people who can make your life hell for a long time, or he is part of a group who wished to do a lot of harm to the fine citizens of the good ole USA!

I say its the latter and we should cut his head off on a live internet feed direct to the Middle East.

(I say this part tounge in cheek)

This part is scary:

So if some guy named Mahmoud Maawad orders all this stuff but actually pays for it they would not report him to the FBI????

One question: If he has been in this country illegally since 1999 as the article alleges and he was arrested last spring for selling alcohol to a minor at a job where he was working off the books then was wasn't he DEPORTED then.

Alot of cities in this country have "Sanctuary" laws prohibiting law enforcement from investigating criminal's immigration status. Go figure. . .

Please. This "Democrats don't love America" routine is getting quite old. We'd love to see him deported just as much as you.

I never said that Dems don't love America. Of course you do. Plenty good Americans have shed there blood for America.

I do wonder why every time some one brings up tighter restrictions on the borders you parade out some Dem congress person complaining about racism.

Before you start, I think the borders under W are a mess.

Before this starts to get ugly, we agree that ole' Mahmoud needs to take his desk, chair, computer and koran and get out of our country.

If the rumors I've heard are true, the personal jumpseat ban was caused by an incident a whole lot scarier than this dude. This guy wasn't an employee (at least not yet....)

uba757,

WTFO..

Before you get all emotional what did I say about W's border policy? I think it sucks. Emotion works in your support group but not in the real world.

When did I say Republicans are better Americans? Read before you write.

Peace, Love and Understanding.

Yeah. Why are all these rumors I'm hearing not flying around here, on flightinfo, of all places. If even half of the crazy shiite i've heard lately is true, we've* got a problem. (*We refers to all of us red, white and blue types.)

I've heard the story from 4 seperate sources, but I've heard 4 different versions. So. Some basis in truth? Mostly BS? Bets on whether we'll ever hear the real truth?

No but it probably makes him smarter. You don't like what he says and all you can come up with is two profane sentences. Maybe you can become a Hollywood movie writer. They have the same amount of imagination.

I bet you're a hoot around the Trailer park.
