Went last night to a meeting in EWR with Dave Webb (Fedex Alpa MEC Pres.)
and he talked a little about hiring. Management has informed him that 48 new hires will be broought in Serpt and Oct 04, take peak off, and 300 new hires in next calendar year!!
Good luck to all

no longer stuck on the panel

Looks like guy/gals hired recently will not be stuck on the panel like we were for the past 3 years. Time spent sitting sideways should get back to the normal 8-18 months.

Good luck to all!

Double Shot,

I've heard 737-800's, 900's, 757's, A320's, or older model 737's. Who knows. When it's on the ramp and painted purple and orange, I'll believe it.

Has anyone heard if they are going to keep interviewing thru the remainder of the year, or will they pick it up after the holidays?

Class of 12 started today

According to the company website another class started today at FedEx and there were indeed 12 people in the class. That means that the rumors of 24 per month appear to have been well founded. Let's hope that the classes keep on coming.

Lou: Since the pool is pretty much empty (as far as I know or have heard) I would think that interviews will continue indefinitely. They might slow down over peak but I would think they will resume quickly after the holidays (if indeed they do stop) so that they can continue to fill the 200-300 (hopefully, anyway) new hires needed next year to replace the retirees and keep the new MDs flying.

Hopefully 2005 will be a good hiring year at FedEx.

Yes a 4 year degree is required.

however I do know of 3 people that have gotten interviews without the degree. 2 were successfull. The other turned down the interview. This was several years ago and needless to say they were all VERY HIGHLY CONNECTED.

If you don't have a degree, a recommendation from a regular pilot is not going to cut it. If you have known Fred, the Vice-president of Flight Ops or the System Chief Pilot since you were a child, I guess anything is possible.

pay question

how many years until your pay breaks the 100K mark? 120k?

thanks

** the reason I ask is because 100K is my income now and I can retire from my job at age 50 with full pension and benefits, and age 50 is 15 years away.

(Not that FedEx is going to hire me, but for discussion purposes I wanted to ask)

thanks

*** maybe at age 50 I will apply to FedEx at THAT time and see if they want an "old guy", with my retirement safely in my pocket :)

From what I recall in the current CBA, you don't make over $100/hr until you're in the right seat with longevity of at least several years. As far as when that move happens, anyone's guess. There are quite a few guys on this forum who have been on the panel for 2 to 3 years.

But if rumors hold true, we'll all be in the front seat of a bunch of widebodies any minute now...;)

Widebody SO $100/hr at 3 years
Narrowbody FO $100/hr at 2 years
Widebody FO $117/hr at 1 year

and up from there...

Approx. average of 1000 hrs/year guarantee, this gets you in the ballpark.

It all depend on when you were hired and if you upgraded at 100% (first availability).

I was hired summer of '01. I could have upgraded to the right seat in the MD-11 a year later in ANC and have been making 100K. Some of my classmates did it but I didn't want to make a double commute just to get to work and moving to ANC wasn't an option. So I stayed in the back of the 27 for another year then upgraded to the right seat of the 11 based in LA.

Making 100K at FedEx can be done in a relatively short amount of time but it definately means making some life changing events (ie. moving to the Phillippeans or Anchorage). I have been at FedEx 3 yrs and I can't hold any widebody seats yet in MEMPHIS (CORRECTION***).

Not sure if this helped or not.

Well with 15 years left till retirement, I have done the math on it and its a toss-up between (and this is assuming I am even going to be looked at by FedEx, as this is merely a discussion....) leaving for FedEx now and starting over (from many standpoints) or just retiring from my present job with peace of mind. In the end, sure, say one retires as a senior MD-11 Captain, in the end the actual pennies to the bank MAY be more overall but we are talking uprooting family, new baby, moving, related stress, etc, etc.

Plus wifey is not strongly supportive of me going to a new job either.

This aint "your grand-dads airline career environment either" so I think I am staying in place.

thanks for the info guys

If it's a toss-up now, you might want to look back later. We are currently in contract negotiations, and I expect substantial increases in compensation.

FedEx Hiring

I've gotten two calls for draft this week (727 F/O).

They must be getting desperate . . . . I am currently in the middle of MD-11 school!!!

***Correction to my earlier post***

I have been with FedEx for three years now and can't hold any widebody seats yet based in MEMPHIS. My chain of thought was interupted at the time, sorry for the confussion.

Two or three classes made a huge difference in 01. Spring guys could hold MEM MD11s. Late spring/summer types could hold ANC. I tried for 2.5 years to hold ANC but was always about 40-50 seniority numbers off. Finally got a right seat (727 MEM..currently upgrading) and can likely hold ANC next bid...however after two months of beatings and trying to learn to land a great big plane on the centerline I think I'll enjoy this seat a while and stay out of training for a year or two. Line....good! Training....bad! Being on someone else's schedule away from family is a drag...

Big hiring means all variables can change. If we really do hire 200-300 next year (rumors) then expect upgrades to look a lot like Postal wave times. On the other hand, if it slows down...go read FJs posts on what life is like stuck down near the bottom. This place is a completely different company based on your seniority. Fortunately, it appears that with retirements and growth some of the stagnation of 02-04 will be over and some hiring should continue for a while.

In any case--it is a great place to work. Good luck to you hopefuls, and I hope the rest of you here get the upgrades you want....

Albie's post is a perfect example of how I "snuck in the back door" and got a LA based MD11 seat.

Albie says...Finally got a right seat (727 MEM..currently upgrading) and can likely hold ANC next bid...however after two months of beatings and trying to learn to land a great big plane on the centerline I think I'll enjoy this seat a while and stay out of training for a year or two.

There were a lot of guys senior to me that could have held LA on the 04-03 posting BUT since they had been in training as a new hire...then training again for the right seat (27) ...they didn't want to go through a third training cycle again in three years time. Those same guys now can't even think about sniffing LA now because it is going a lot more senior these days.

Morale...bid what you want to fly...and get it as soon as you can because that opportunity might not present itself next time around...in some cases.

ALLRIGHT BOYS, clear the decks, big rumor here:

I'm currently in -10 panel school ... one of my classmates talked to a bus standards guy who was in a meeting with JL and BC today ... the europe base is ON ... 80 crews eventually, based in Paris but you'll have to live in Switzerland ... 25 airbusses, these will be acquired planes (some MD-11's may come from Delta, freeing up busses to go)... Bid may be as early as January, small base at first like LAX ... you heard it here FIRST!!!!

Zurich. . . . again??

This one's been around for a while. . . as long as they're all senior to me, Buh, Bye!!

So would that be a 3 hr call out for reserves like it is in LA??

This logistical nightmare will be interesting...all to be incorporated in the next contract I'm sure. So that is why the company is throwing up a big stink about relocation expenses being negotiated.

With the Enders report, growth in China and expansion in Europe the next contract will be done in not time...haha... that sure is a lot of RetroPay!!!

I'm not so sure this Zurich things is good news unless you want to be based there. It seems obvious this is just away for the company not to have deadhead people there. It will be the end of SIBA, and require less crews overall because it will be much more efficient....

Oh yeah, the good news, my bud was in a meeting with Cheever. We just bought 8 MD-11s from Delta and are buying as many A300/310s as we can get our hands on. They were told 600-800 new hires over the next 3 yrs.

Hot D@mn! This is the best one I've heard yet. It's a good one even if it's only half true...

Another class started yesterday!

I'm beginning to sound like a parrot, but at that risk I just wanted to let everybody know that another class of 12 new hires started yesterday. The new caboose is number 4244. I hope that the classes continue. Any of you in class with any hot rumors or news please let the rest of us know what you hear.

Welcome aboard to the new hires, and keep on coming so I can get off reserve!

FJ

PS: I should add that I finally got some good news, and wasn't about my car insurance with Geico. After dropping 1 number closer to the bottom of the bid list in Sep (from Aug) I finally moved up some slots for the Oct bid month. I moved 17 numbers up from the bottom this month, which means 17 of the new hires from earlier in the summer activated this month. Sweeeeeeeet. I'm pretty sure a "trash line" is within my reach for Oct, but I'll probably stick with the pm reserve until I can hold a non trash line. We'll see later on this afternoon when the bids come out.
