Drafted at ASA means they tell you to call scheduling when you give the in-range call, which is against the contract (like they actually care), and tell you are 'extended' or 'drafted' to do another trip after getting in on the last round trip on the 4 day you're doing. Or calling you at home and begging you to come in and do a trip on your off day. "Oh yes, we will give you another day off later in the month". Keep dreaming.

Goose,
Hope your little ones is doing well.

Fed Ex draft

Draft at Fed Ex is simply the company asking you to pick up an extra flight at 150% pay. It is voluntary. Volunteer on the otherhand is when you put your name on a list to fly extra and if the company needs you, you fly the trip at 150% pay.

All this is above and beyond your regular schedule. What does it mean? It means they had insufficient people on reserves to cover open flights, whether it was people calling in sick, extra frieght, weather related, or whatever. Point is they were short on people.

Keep in mind, guys, that getting you out of the pool or into the interview for the next hiring wave is in our best interests, too. The more pilots we have on the property, the higher our relative seniority. The only downside of a full manned airline is that there is little or no overtime available--but I don't fly that anyway. Not many 727 guys fly OT. Even at 2nd year pay, most military guys earn as much or more flying in the military as they do on the line at Fedex. So...guess where many of us spend our time off VERSES picking up extra trips? The airlift guys may be have a different equation, but most fighter guys I know (self included) very rarely even fly our line guarantee due to these ANG flying commitments.

Actually, I (in a past life) was at ASA, and a captain on the ATR... and know all about those drafts... but I had thought that this was a military term... not the airline term..

thanks anyway.

Draft and Vol.

Draft and Volunteer is both good and bad. While it keeps people like me and albie junior, and thus in a lower paying seat. It keeps the company running lean, which keeps cost low, but more importantly ensure job security (ie prevents furlough).

Draft & Volunteer

It also helps me pay for two ex-wives. . . .

 Has anyone heard anything around FedEx about class dates.. How long will it take to sort out the most recent bid?? I am beginning to wonder if I actually interviewed or if this is a really lonnnggg dream.. Almost a year long dream!!!

rumors

Sorry, but there are only rumors out there - and lots of them. Everything from this month to June to none at all this year. I was in your shoes not too long ago, waiting in the pool with no class dates on the radar screen. Rest assured though - you WILL be in a class, but no one knows when right now. I know that doesn't pay the bills in the short term, but hang in there.

On a side note, when I check my reserve leveling position (how many others on reserve with me and position), I notice there are a HELL OF A LOT LESS dudes/dudettes sitting reserve these days. I guess we have had a lot called up.

There is no recent definitive news about class dates or hiring numbers. Some of the posts above give some great analysis using is the best logic I've seen. I will tell you as a 727 S/O LCA we have not been informed of any new hire class dates, yet. My best guess is Jun or Jul. Why? 1. Jun1 is the start of the FDX fiscal year i.e. new $$ become available to the training dept 2. The seat bid (due to close 1 April) will need some time to flush out, fill secondaries etc and give the flight bosses a real picture of crew demand. Once the real numbers are determined, the flight bosses will argue their requirements to the budget guys. 3. lastly the previous training letter ends in Apr/May meaning the training pipe line dries up, which is not a good thing. Either way, Jun/Jul is still an educated guess. Stay tuned and hang in there, I suspect you will hear something soon.

This war will effect this more than any other factor.... will the Iraqi's fight, or will they give in... then we'll see how the economy does, then Fedex will decide if they want to hire or not..

:(

Some more info

Here's some more fuel for the fire. Consistent with what other people seem to be saying......

Jumpseater just got back from an aviation forum this weekend that Hr attended. Reinforced the info posted. Currently window closed. Not sure when hiring will start. No news on class date. They are said to be waiting to see how the bid falls out.

IF you check the bid it looks like they will reduce the 727 group by +/- 60 Captains and +/- 60 F/O's. Safe to assume that they will let about 60 727 Second Officer positions go as well. This is where the new hire classes go.

So....once the bid is complete...I guess they will check to see how many current 727 S/O's get awarded new spots. If that number is greater than about 60....they should need to fill those slots with new people.

Bottom line: Hopefully we will all get more info once the bid all settles. Final bid is beginning of April.

IF I hear anything more along the line...will post.

practice bid released

Our practice bid was released today (which gives guys an idea where they stand with their current selections). I believe this is primary bid info only, but not certain. I'm sure the poolies will be interested to hear that there were 53 vacancys listed in the B-727 Second Officer position. This would indicate that the company wants those positions filled.

Just another tidbit of info.

I think we all appreciate even the tiniest crumb, even if it only keeps the thread up on the first page!
