Seriously, though, I figured it was one Prof. Jenkins of ERAU, who seems to appear in most of these newspaper articles where they need a "sound bite" from an "aviation specialist".

I personally know Prof. Jenkins (but not through ERAU)....you have no idea how true your comment is...

With the exception of the pilots, the help at SWA is a lot better looking and friendlier than any Wal-mart "associate". But it's been awhile since I've been to Wal-mart. Speculate it has gotten worse.

Like the greeters at WalMart, Southwest tries to push us to work until we croak. I'd like a seat assignment and retirement at 60, thank you very much.

Now here is someone who truly has no clue what they are talking about. Southwest has actually been paying people to take early outs.

Seats - show up early or print your boarding pass on the internet and take any dam seat you want.

Age 60 - Not sure if you are aware, but changing the age 60 rule does not require you to work past 60. You will still be free to retire whenever you please.

Oh but I do! My father treats it like a sport, e-mailing me articles with Prof. Jenkins' words of wisdom highlighted for my perusal. :D

You know what they say . . . . . "Those that can, do. And those that can't, teach".

And those that can't teach.........manage.

Those that can't manage........go to work for the FAA.

Joking. Just joking. Really.

Is that why Southwest is spearheading the change?

Are you seriously going to argue that pilots retiring at age 60 will have the same benefits as those retiring at 65 in the future? Two words: golden handcuffs.

Showing up early to beat the rush doesn't equate to an assigned seat. What exactly is your point?

Ah yes, a CFI turned commuter F/O with all the answers. Did you go to ERAU as well?

If you were him you would feel the same. This age sixty thing can set back a whole lot of pilots that many years.

It's easier to generalize than refute.

I think he means that if you show up to get an A boarding card you can have your pick of many different seats, and "assign" that one to yourself. I can't speak for the age 60 thing. Maybe they see it as a way to go to bat for the boy's at SWAPA. Or maybe some other "well rounded" aviator could it explain it to ya. Jeesh!

I know Prof Jenkins as well, also not through ERAU. Too bad he's not the one quoted in the above mentioned article :)

As far as the above quote goes, Jenkins does a lot more than teach, and he's got more money than most pilots will ever dream of seeing. As stupid as any talking head quote sounds, I bet they get paid quite well for their face time.

Is what why we are "spearheading" the change.

Why in Gods name would you want someone to tell you where you MUST sit and who you MUST sit next to rather than have complete control yourself.

I guess thats how they do it at the commuters.
