Hey guys,

With alternating crews we're spending nearly every other weekend in the oh so glorious hamptons (not) and have been doing this every summer for almost two years now. We've stayed all over Long Island (Marriots preferred) and, I think, have completely exhausted everything we can find to keep us from killing ourselves.

So, any suggestions for some nearby activities we may not have come across yet? Keeping in mind the local traffic disaster we are required to confine ourselves within 2-3 hours of the airport. And, no, the city isn't an option for us (we see enough of it anyway).

Thanks for any help...I'm of the opinion that there is nowhere i'd rather go less than HTO.

Where are you guys from? The Hamptons are home to some of the nicest beaches on the planet. Which attract some of the prettiest women.

I live on the Island so feel free to PM me but you need to be a little more specific. How old are you guys and what are you into?

Have you guys tried staying on or visiting Shelter Island?
Their is a ton of things to do, from short track car racing to wine taste testing on the North Fork.

Marriott's are great but their isn't one located within an hour's drive (no traffic) of the Hamptons. With traffic it could take you hours to get from the nearest Marriott to East Hampton Airport. I would bag the Marriott's and stick with the bed and breakfasts or the smaller local hotels.

IMHO, putting up with the hours of traffic for a few Marriott points is what is killing your buzz.

Well, as for the marriots, you're right about the distance. But, a new courtyard opened up that's close. Our company, for whatever reason, prefers not to put us in B&B's...

No, we haven't tried shelter island...what's on that?
As for racing-that would be fantastic! So would the wine. We tried to go tasting once but ended up in a traffic snarl that would make any LA'er proud and, of course, got called in the middle by the client. Tasting is still on the list though.

Got a website for info on the racing? I'm a racing nut, pretty much any kind of auto racing will do in a bind...

If you like racing go over to the riverhead race way. Do you guys like Golf b/c there are alot of nice golf courses on the east end? if you have the weekends free go to the bars on dunn road they are alot of fun. There are also places in hampton bays to rent jet skies and boats and things like that, they are buy the coast guard station. Shelter island is alot of fun they have alot of things to do on the island

Go out to Montauk.
A bunch of things to do there.
There's a great seafood place along the way just off the highway. A lot of celebs spotted there.
My dad use to own the deli on main street in Sag Harbor. Lots of good memories growing up there!!

During the right time of year there's stripers and blues right off the shore of Montauk, if you're into fishing.

Go to www.riverheadraceway.com

Looks like fun.

I grew up on Long Island. The traffic in the Hamptons is the worst (eastbound on Friday, Westbound on Sunday). You could go to Montauk and go deep sea fishing or try to go surfing. There are plenty of golf courses. Go for a wine tour on the North Fork. You could go to Splish Splash (waterpark) in Riverhead. Go shopping at the outlets in Riverhead. Take a ferry to Fire Island and enjoy the beach (no cars allowed, quiet). If you have time, catch a Long Island Ducks minor leauge baseball team. Rent a jet-ski for the day. Be a snob and go to a polo match. Go sky-diving. Visit Gurney's Inn (sp). It is a hotel on the ocean that also has a spa. If you are not staying there you can buy a day pass. Or you can sit in the hotel and watch TV all day (yeah!). Good luck.

I was at HTO for the first time yesterday, and I must say, it was not a pleasant experience. The head guy at the small "Executive" FBO across the field was the most rude, dismissive, businessman I have ever dealt with. Just unbelievable ... truly. Then when we went downtown to find a place to eat, no one had seats inside. Tried three places. Luckily it was a gorgeous day for eating outside on the rickety gazeebo (benches slanted about 70 degrees over ... soon to put someone on their azz). We also had to walk back to the field since the FBO wouldn't give us a ride or even call us a taxi, but our pax was gracious enough to drop us on his way out.

No offense to the folks who are from there ... but I thought it was a severely strange and rude place to visit. Gorgeous scenery ... but strange people.

North of the mason-dixon line !!!

LOL! :D

Man ... that guy who runs Meyers up there at HTO is a poster child for every stereotype of rude yankee in existance.

Are you guys nuts?! Listen to us LIers like jagmagic and rice and you will have a great time in the Hamptons or anywhere on Long Island. There is always something fun to do within 15-20 min. of where you are anywhere on the Island. If you are stayin in the Hamptons, there are a ton of bars and clubs in the area with lots and lots of gorgeous women. I'd recommend Tavern in East Hampton, The DriftInn in East Quogue, The world famous Boardy Barn in Hampton Bays, etc...the list goes on and on. Take a taxi...it's worth it. If going out isn't your thing...there are many great restaurants in town (HTO) and also in Sag Harbor. As jagmagic mentioned, tons of golf courses, but don't be surprised if you have to pay some decent bucks for a weekend round if you get a tee time. All the other suggestions made by everyone else are great also.

Not sure who the rude guy is at the airport; but let's not turn this thing into a North vs. South battle. Rude people exist in the South, too.

Makes my butt hurt just think'n about that one. :erm:

To the people who think all of Fire Island is gay, you don't have a clue. Yes there are two gay communities, the Pines and Cherry Grove. But there are about 10 other towns that are not. If you want to go to a town that has plenty to do, go to Ocean Beach (Take the Bayshore Ferry). Great restaurants and bars. The beach is beautiful and it is quiet on the weekdays. They have been shooting a reality show about a summer time-share for the past 3 weeks. Hopefully that will give you some insight on what to do at Fire Island.
