At the Senate hearings Parker said there would be a cut of 10%, but today, on CNBC, he says no personnel cuts? Parker's original offer was 8.4Bil and no more, then he raised it by $1Bil. This weekend the WSJ says USA added $1Bil to the offer, Parker says nothing has been added? Delta and everyone else says there is at least a 33% route overlap, Parker says no. The Senate hates the idea of DAL/USA merger. The "if your making so much money now, why don't you re-instate the pensions" question was classic.

There won't be overlap. You see, the Delta routes that would overlap, well they go to the highest bidder. The bidder being UAL, CAL, Airtan, Southwest etc. Parker takes the money and runs. You get the picture though General. You really do and I can't blame you for being against this thing 100%.

Well, that is kinda funny, since Rigby stated he would be willing to give up most of CLT in favor of ATL. That would really pi$$ off some senior USAir pilots living there. ATL is the most profitable hub in the world, and we are the largest carrier there. Regardless, this is all moot. It will be over soon and we will be stand alone.

General, your guys real threat is the interantional routes you own. You brag about as you should but that is why guys like Parker are gunning for you. They don't care about the domestic overlap. You have the best international routes by far. That is what he wants and others will bid to get those routes. Nobody cares about the domestic overlap, it'll get sold!

That is another part of this deal that is so crazy. Let's let in more LCCs to compete against! Sounds great, doesn't it? Wow, that is so smart. Let Southwest or someone in to LGA, or give them slots at DCA. How about giving them a new hub at CLT, since you would giving up plenty of gates. Can you see how smart that is, yet?

Doug could care less about that. Look at his background and it makes sense why. AmWest shares both of it's hubs with WN, and has done just fine during Parker's term. It was one of the things he said about the merger with UsAir-he wasn't afraid of WN or any other LCC and didn't mind taking it to them where appropriate. I'm sure many thought he was nuts when he lowered all of those fares after the merger on the east coast, but it's worked. I can see your objection to his opinion coming from an airline that relies heavily on the principle(s) of fortress hubbing, just stating that giving up assets to WN isn't something he would be losing sleep over.
If he gets the chance, what will be funny is when he tries to hand over assets to United. While I certainly don't read as much as you or others on this thing, I haven't seen anything from UsAirways' about what alliance the 'new' Delta would be in. He's probably hedging to play each alliance off one another, but I bet he wants to stay in Star. Lufthansa and BMI aren't as big as Air France/KLM but it's close enough when you add in DL and US Euro routes. The big plus would be Star's greater strength in the Pacific where Delta is weaker, the complete dominance of west coast traffic thru PHX/SLC/LAS/DEN/LAX/SFO even PDX/SEA to a degree, and the pull of traffic away from NW through CVG/ORD. Everyone(gov't/newspapers) is so busy focusing on the east coast overlap, I wonder if anyone has considered the fact that of the airlines that could get divestitures three are already linked up in SkyTeam and two are in Star. Worse yet if DL/US goes down and UA/CO does as well, SkyTeam could quickly be left with only NW in the US. Something tells me that this isn't lost on Parker, and that this is one of the reasons he's willing to divest.
The reason he doesn't GET IT is because he has never had to give up slots before. The legacy airlines have built most of the terminals (or at least renovated them), paid for the slots, and have created strongholds at some of the busiest airports in the US. Doug doesn't seem to understand, or care as you say, that allowing in better funded competition (like SW in PHL) will lead to your demise. Those airports like LGA and DCA are right now our best profit centers, primarily because we have most of the slots and gates. This is obvious to everyone except Parker. That is why a merger with NWA instead of US would be better for DL, since there would be no assets sold at any of those airports, since NW and DL do not compete directly to any cities from them. The best example is SWA in PHL. They came in, started to grow, and US is feeling it big time. The same will happen if they get into LGA or DCA.

The ability to compete against Southwest has to involve more than blocking them out of a certain airport otherwise you're just postponing the inevitable, your eventual demise. The only way to beat them is to offer a superior product at an equal or better price. Delta has the ability with the right management(not saying ours, but definitely not current) to do this.
