ATLANTA (AP) - Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's third-largest carrier, reported Tuesday a narrower fourth-quarter loss on a solid increase in revenue, but its results pushed its red ink to more than $12 billion since January 2001.
The company, which is operating under bankruptcy protection, said it lost $1.24 billion in the three months ending Dec. 31, compared to a loss of $2.21 billion in the same period a year ago.

It is true it was a large loss. Never good to see that. A lot can't be seen on what affects a pension drop would do (save them $800 million a year), and an increase in RASM (we were getting 85% compared to other majors---which will change with the new revenue guy from Alitalia supposedly---he said we could increase revenue by $2.5 billion), will do. The 4th quarter still had Indy Air lowering yields for everyone, and gas was higher. It was a bad quarter no doubt. We still have more cash on hand (up to $2.9 billion, with $2 billion unrestricted), and we are getting closer to our best time of the year--Spring Break and Summer. But, any negative publicity from the pilots or throwing out the pilot contract could really throw a loop into their plans. You have to remember also that our DL management is watching UAL and their stock awards to management (8%) very closely, and they want the same obviously. They won't get it with a pilot strike.

Remember that "loss" can also mean a paper loss. Profit and loss can be matters of opinion with a lot of the financial creativity out there. Clearly fuel costs continue to batter DAL and the other legacies (and JetBlue).

I think I read that Delta's total cash figure had slightly improved (or remained roughly the same) - that would be the figure I would watch because without cash the game is OVER...

Management is smart enough to NOT lower fares, as that will hand revenue to other airlines. Pilot wages simply are too high, and if Delta's pilots don't accept reality, then Delta's demise can be solely attributed to labor's greed.

I will take the good General's word on that and there is your answer, ultrarunner. I don't care if they post a 100 billion dollar or 50 trillion dollar loss in Ch11 - watch the cash on hand and that is the best indicator of health while in bk.

Bottomline is REAL numbers keep it simple, it should be a law. Our world has become to complicated-period, dipshits(read bean counters-management and asshole people for that matter) will capitalize and take full advantage of anything they can spin. Nice 6-12 month severance packages for any director & above who moves on too. And if 25% of senior mgmt took that last paycut that came around in December I'd eat my hat.
