ATLANTA (AP) - Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's third-largest carrier, reported Tuesday a narrower fourth-quarter loss on a solid increase in revenue, but its results pushed its red ink to more than $12 billion since January 2001.
The company, which is operating under bankruptcy protection, said it lost $1.24 billion in the three months ending Dec. 31, compared to a loss of $2.21 billion in the same period a year ago.

Wow hope I never feel good about losing 1.2 bil. That would wipe me out.

Hey maybe they could get the state legislature and/or local government taxing authorities to give them some tax relief. That would help them out wouldn't it? Nevermind that its completely unfair and anticompetitive...Oh Yeah, I forgot this is the ATL bro'.

What does DAL need to do to turn itself around? 1 billion is still a lot to lose, not even close breaking even.

It is true it was a large loss. Never good to see that. A lot can't be seen on what affects a pension drop would do (save them $800 million a year), and an increase in RASM (we were getting 85% compared to other majors---which will change with the new revenue guy from Alitalia supposedly---he said we could increase revenue by $2.5 billion), will do. The 4th quarter still had Indy Air lowering yields for everyone, and gas was higher. It was a bad quarter no doubt. We still have more cash on hand (up to $2.9 billion, with $2 billion unrestricted), and we are getting closer to our best time of the year--Spring Break and Summer. But, any negative publicity from the pilots or throwing out the pilot contract could really throw a loop into their plans. You have to remember also that our DL management is watching UAL and their stock awards to management (8%) very closely, and they want the same obviously. They won't get it with a pilot strike.

Bye Bye--General Lee

Remember that "loss" can also mean a paper loss. Profit and loss can be matters of opinion with a lot of the financial creativity out there. Clearly fuel costs continue to batter DAL and the other legacies (and JetBlue).

I think I read that Delta's total cash figure had slightly improved (or remained roughly the same) - that would be the figure I would watch because without cash the game is OVER...

Wow, another Paper loss.... Them boy's are gonna start running out of paper.
I hope big D gets some traction on raising fares soon. It would be nice to turn the corner sometime this decade.

Hi, it's Dave.

Management is smart enough to NOT lower fares, as that will hand revenue to other airlines. Pilot wages simply are too high, and if Delta's pilots don't accept reality, then Delta's demise can be solely attributed to labor's greed.

All the more reason to give Management a big bonus!! I'd say they have definately earned it.

Being relatively new to these "discussion" forums, who is this "TOOL", Dave? And why do you all even bother to respond to his inane posts? BFD he has an MBA. Many of us professionals do and don't have to wear it on our sleeves and constantly remind others of that fact. If he is so self important, why is he hanging out on these discussion boards trying to inflame everyone. I only can assume he has no life and is suffering from little man syndrome in more ways than one. Now get back to work Dave

Herman - it's just flamebait. Someone who gets their rocks off trying to tick off others. It might just be another teenager with too much time on his hands and no Xbox.

The "ignore" function under the "User CP" link works well and blocks posts from posters you'd prefer not to read.

If you ignore reality and choose to live in a dream world, that's your decision, but one day you will have to accept the reality that you and your pilot friends are hopelessly dependent on airline management.

Once more for those who still don't get it - the amount of the loss for a carrier in Ch11 is just about meaningless. Look at the cash on hand.

And how much would that be skykid?

$2.9 billion, of which $2 billion is unrestricted. That is more than the 3rd quarter of 05. How did United lose $12 billion last quarter? Was that all cash Ultrarunner? Can you explain that?

Bye Bye--General Lee

$2.9 billion, of which $2 billion is unrestricted.

I will take the good General's word on that and there is your answer, ultrarunner. I don't care if they post a 100 billion dollar or 50 trillion dollar loss in Ch11 - watch the cash on hand and that is the best indicator of health while in bk.

Bottomline is REAL numbers keep it simple, it should be a law. Our world has become to complicated-period, dipshits(read bean counters-management and asshole people for that matter) will capitalize and take full advantage of anything they can spin. And IMHO they should all be shot in the f!!kin head, back to the bottle now.

Nice 6-12 month severance packages for any director & above who moves on too. And if 25% of senior mgmt took that last paycut that came around in December I'd eat my hat.

What a joke this company has become.
