Archie, do you work for Net Jets now? How does the NJ job compare to Delta overall?

Yes, I do work for NetJets now. Comparing Delta to NJA is really apples and oranges....it's kind of tough to compare a Pt 121 pax carrier to the fractional world, because it's so different.

I don't want to hijack this thread into a Delta vs NJA comparison, so if you want my impressions of the two, PM me.

Hopefully, that comment was not directed at me personally, because I no longer fly for Delta. Pertaining to your comment about "plenty of people who will take my place," I understand that the short notice recall list is down to 60 something people, is that correct? ..................Why do you think it is that all those furloughees are bypassing recall to the Mothership? Serious question.

first of all, no not directed at you personally and I didn't mean it the way it sounded.

I understand coming back to be on reserve in NYC is not a good deal. Frankly, if I had a decent job on the outside, I would bypass until I could hold something better.

Having said that, I am sure there are also people who have not been as lucky on the outside and will jump at the chance to come back. And I am sure others, if you live in NYC or ATL for example, don't really care about being on reserve. Plus, its all relative. A buddy of mine is furloughed and flying for Kalitta. He hate's it and will come back as soon as it's offered. Is Delta what it used to be? No. Is it still better than some options. Yes. However, the choice is yours, and I respect either decision.

Why do I think people are bypassing? Here goes. First, I think Delta did a great job of hiring quality people. And I think the majority of these people have done very well outside of Delta. So no need to come back. Second, I know a lot of people went back into the military, and will stay til retirement now. Third, I think there are people who plan on coming back, but why not wait until your seniority allows you a better quality of life. Last, I think there is a group who just plain don't want to leave a stable job until they know for sure Delta is going to survive.

Those are my thoughts on it? Anything else to add?

I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head.

The first group you mentioned that have done well outside of Delta will never be back IMHO, and the last group that have a stable job will be thinking long and hard about leaving that stability (and being home every night and weekend) to return to being absent from their family for half the month. I think there's a better than average chance that they won't be back either.

Wow...such venom at my rosy picture! :)

I guess its all about perspective. While furloughed for 3 years I spent my time flying ratty bizjets and being on call 24-7 with minimal planned days off. So ANY 121 reserve system is a piece of cake coming from that. Being able to have fairly predictable schedule and the simple long/short call was like being in heaven when I came back....even with covering 3 airports in NYC. I haven't forgotten my furlough experience and my 3hr sit in CVG today was nothing compared to the 16hr duty days with 8-hr sits at an FBO waiting for jerks that inevitably arrived 2hrs late yet were suddenly in a hurry!

And yes, the -800 life is easier than the Mad Dog and hasn't been as pathetically understaffed. The -800 trips are usually pretty efficient with 6hrs+ flying per day and generally only 1 or 2 legs a day with some interesting destinations. Reserve is different this summer vs. last summer...I rarely flew on Short Call last year...they were like additional days off and most of the time my trips were assigned the day prior...but now I fly every reserve day.

As far as the $100k I wouldn't have made that if it weren't for the understaffing this summer...I had 3 months where I was paid well over 100 hours due to Inverse Assignments and yellow slips. (no greenies so back off!) So yes, it'd be more like the mid -80s if I just got 70hrs a month.

So like many things in life, its about perspective...and at this company every airplane and the shedules they fly can yield an entirely different picture. I'm sure flying the 767ER as a lineholder is like working for a different airline compared to the MD88 plug.

Anyway, flame on brothas!

Speaking as a guy that decided to do something outside of the biz.....I think most dudes that bypass are waiting to see what happens. Most of us sacrificed a lot to fly for a living, and would love to go back to the cockpit. A lot of guys might be willing to take a drop in pay and QOL to fly again, but it just doesn't make sense to do it for a company in bankruptcy. Until the company exits, and there are no mergers on the horizon, the logical decision appears to be bypass. JMO.

Ok there are a lot of complaints about the Delta schedules today! Here is my perspective! I am getting exactly what I want every month! My preference is as much time off as possible. I am flying four day rotations, Friday through Monday! Early releases! 16 to 18 days off a month! Every month I have at least one stretch of 7 days off in a row! Around 76 hours or so! On my off days scheduling calls between one and five times a day for Inverse assignments! I can pick and choose which ones I would consider! I don't like to help them out to much! Two inverse assignment trips and I am over 100 hours of pay, with around 15 days off! I did an IA yesterday, an early morning STL out and back! Off by 11:30 AM, 3:40 block/11:00 hours pay! I got a authorized personal drop approved this month(thats a first) and then they approved a personal drop of a four day trip on the 9th! 88 trips still suck, but the pilots are great to fly with, I have a good time at work, and I can make over $100,000 if I choose! There are some significant downsides don't get me wrong, but it could be worse. I would not stay at a regional over Delta! Maintenace has been my big issue lately! Ok thats my perspective! 07/00 hire date!
