So likely is that our JV/code-share system with JAL will be us doing all of their international flying to the states.

I personally cannot see that happening. The reason being is that the typical Japanese passenger has pretty high expectations on service and quality on their flights. I can't see many high yield business passengers paying for tickets on US carriers as the US airlines wouldn't know how to deal with them because the cultures are just too different.

No way that JAL will cut all of their international flying. Even if they did, the one who would benefit most would be ANA. Our passenger numbers have been up 10% in the last month alone......
 
The latest really ugly scenario is some sort of purchase of an unspecified part of UAL by AA to counter the DAL Asia strength. After the TWA debacle and the meltdown of the US Air/Am West merger, there's zero enthusiasm at the APA for ANY kind of merger or acquisition, especially with over 1000 AA pilots still on furlough after more than 7 years.
