Keep in mind that FEDEX is funding UAV research. Word from the FAA is that the first approved routing will be on a 757 testbed flying ANC to Asia around 2015.
 
Jacked up? I flew 342 hours last year a lot of that I picked up. At $900/block-hr for 07 and now here I sit in Paris for three days, who is flying the jacked up schedule?

The guy should do both. Wait until the fall out from mergers and see who life aint worth living.

Fly as little as you want but how much of that 342 hours you flew last year agreed with your natural sleep?

When I stated "jacked" up schedule I was not talking about how much you worked, but more of how much time was used at your own expense to recover.

I would agree with call to do both, but I'm not among the masses who think that Fdx is the holy grail. Working for 90's pay and retirement benefits is not my idea of an ideal job.

Or you could go to DAL.... stay at DAL..... and add 10 years to your life by not working a jacked up schedule for the next 30 years.

Flame away with the furlough or F/O pay speak. But I'd rather work a schedule more conducive to the bodies natural clock vs stuck with "flipping" my body clock every week.
I know this thread is about Delta or Fedex but when I compare my schedule (UPS) to my friends' schedules at purple they seem to be very similar. Until about 2 years ago I too thought that cargo flying was all about night flying however there is plenty of day flying at both purple and big brown if that’s what you prefer. Personally I had more night landings at Airtran than here at UPS so I think your assumptions are pretty inaccurate.
 
Darn, you got me beat. I flew 374 hrs w/ 39 landings. Shooting for 300 this year with 25 landings.


I'm curious. How do you guys do that? Is it common or are you just one of a few.

At SWA we make good cash, but we fly our a**es off to get it. :crying:

There are a couple of things that drive it. First, with our manning right now, the reserves aren't being used very heavily. Also, due our system form, the majority of our trips pay trip rig instead of block. For example, I fly mostly short leg out-and-backs that end up blocking under 3 hours but pay 6.

I'm sure there's research going on but I bet you every student pilot of today will long be retired before he/she sees airlines using airplanes with a 1-pilot only cockpit.
25 years or so later we might be seeing first commercial UAV flights. I certainly am not going to lose any sleep over this.

Not to mention the possible merger with NorthWest. Get on ASAP. It is all about seniority in this business. Take the first job offered. If you have stuff in with FedEx they understand taking another job waiting for them to call.


Be able to go back to the previous job, when you get furloughed after whatever merger DAL decides to do also! So you can build seniority while not working there!

Thanks that makes sense. Sounds like a pretty good deal.
 
I recently had a similar decison to make. I have very high level contacts at fed ex... actually the highest level contact you can have and then some.. i chose to leave the regional world and go to the first one that called.... I could not be happier.. will I go to FedEx in the future? Who knows, but right now I am happy where I am. Always go to the first one that calls...

The highest contact you can have is God. The only person higher than that, according to himself, is Fred Smith. That must be your contact.

Agree with advice to go to the first one that calls. You only have a decision to make if and when the second call comes. I learned this first hand.

I must have a "jacked up" schedule too....just flew one leg to ABQ with 35hrs off at 3pm and returned one leg back and in my own bed by 12pm...doing that "jacked up" schedule all month!
 
I know there are no certainties in aviation, but wanted to hear some opinions. What does everyone think of accepting a job with Delta in the next couple months versus holding out for a job at FedEx probably two years from now? Assuming the person is in a job they currently enjoy and has good ins at both companies. I have already heard the first one to hire you, is there any other thought process here? I just heard that Fedex will not even interview you if you fly for another major.

tough call..but i do have friends at delta who want to leave and come to FDX and are willing to go to HKG or CDG...good luck!

Interesting point.. can God be considered a contact. You can debate the existence of God... Therere God does not count as a contact.. I do not belive God can be considered a contact... try again please!

That sounds great. However, is that the norm? I'm going to assume you've been there for quite a while as well. But as a new hire with the retreads coming back and the reduction of a 3 crew aircraft, I can only imagine how long it would take to get a regular schedule like that. Much less an upgrade then getting a decent schedule.

i have been here 13 years this month...and if you live in domicile you can get some pretty great schedules...commuters fight for the double deadheads which tend to be all the night hubturn stuff which i don't touch with a 10 foot pole...but we are probably 65% day flying now.....when u average about 250 to 350 hrs a year and can get the one leg day flying it is pretty darn good...and thanks to the rule change i have the option to go another 27 years..ouch!!!
