I also believe the DAL pension plan is going to be gone. It seems that that is the "going plan" for management at this time.

I also expect more pay cuts to be coming in the near future, either in the courts or not.

DAL, COMAIR, or ASA ... it's going to be a rough couple of years for everyone. We need to back up each other in these times rather than to keep bashing each other and seeming to enjoy the hardships of another.

Oh it's better than a "very good chance." I've never applied to Delta and don't intend to. I like my gig. But I am familiar with the testing from my previous life.

Question: Would you rather -
a) slam a car door on your hand or
b) throw up on a crowded bus?

Answer: You would rather endure personal suffering to the point of agony than humiliate yourself (and your company) in public.

As I see it, most Delta pilots who post on here have no compunction about routinely humiliating themselves in public.

General,

Do you think the pension plan will survive? Reasons?

Probably not. I am 40 and I think I will NOT have one, so I will vote the current one away. It is time for me to save on the outside and make outside investments for my future. There will probably be another mass exodus from guys with a certain amount of money in there right now, and then we will just have a 401K program like the rest.

General, you may not have to vote it away. Most of Delta's pension obligations are with the non-contract employees. The non-contract employees DB pensions are scheduled to be terminated in 2010. The only remaining sizeable DB pension is that of the pilots, which has already been frozen and is being replaced by the DC plan. The overwhelming number of pilots at DAL no longer have a 60% FAE DB plan. My guess is that most DAL pilots have only about 30% or less FAE in the now frozen DB plan. As the years pass, Delta's obligations to the DB plan will continue to shrink until it ultimately phases out all together on its own.

I'm actually happier with my new frozen DB and the 14.5% DC then with so much reliance placed on the DB plan. It just makes sense to not have so many retirement eggs in one basket. A portfolio of a reduced DB plan a DC plan, 401k with 2% matching, a Roth IRA and individuals savings is more to my liking.

FDJ2,

It only makes sense to have a bunch of different ways to get retirement income. It spreads the risk!
