The problem with your theory is that while they're attracting the loyalty of this group of people, they're upsetting a far larger group of people (the average person that thinks this stuff is disgusting). If I was a paying Delta customer, I think I might take my business elsewhere to an airline that doesn't contribute to causes that I find disgusting. This is not good business.
Exactly
I just got back from my $40 hair cut in the inreasingly trendy part of town I live in. The staff is "diverse" and always a fun group of people to talk about current events with. All, meaning 100%, of the people from "Stevie," who considers himself "transgendered," to Beth, the Sunday School Teacher, were highly offended by Delta's actions. To sum up their thoughts:
"Why is Delta taking pay cuts from its employees and asking Congress to bail them out of their pension obligations - just to waste money on crap like this?"
This thread is relevant on this board because it shows that Delta is being managed by people who's first concern is not the health and survival of Delta.
AirTran is spending its money on
wireless networking at all their gates to help out their
business customers,
XM radio, and increased frequent flier perks. These are broad based marketing efforts that don't offend anyone. More and more frequently I hear my Fortune 100 Clients who travel commerically about 65% of the time ( the other 35% being Corporate jets ) saying that they
prefer Airtran's service. The reasons are obvious,
Airtran is focused on their customers while Delta seems to be focused on pushing some bizzare agenda.
I don't care who you are - Delta's sponsorship of a book tour event for the author of "
Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star" and Youth Pride ( which goes to public schools and talks with children about their sexuality, as well as setting up homosexually focused clubs ) is pretty racy. For many of us it is distasteful and wrong.
At Delta, we employees give personal donations to the United Way and March of Dimes. Yet, there is Company money available to sponsor a speech about the "Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star?"
Gays may, or may not, be headed for hell. But, I know for sure where Delta's stock is headed.
