Mostly because our reserve system stinks! Unless you live in NYC, its pretty rough to be on 2 hour short call, up to 8 days a month, because it covers a 24hr period. You're going to spend a lot of time in the crash pad. However, lots of reserve guys that I have flown with, say they are getting used on every short call day!I think your source is confused - new hires (like me) are able to pick the B767ER base in JFK as First Officers. The base does exclusively international trips - there are no domestic trips in the base. The reason that there were new hires who got this equipment is that other Delta pilots didn't want it and stayed on their equipment (like MD-88) rather than bid for the B757/767 out of JFK. Why? I don't know.
Maybe that's why his friend is telling everyone that he is a "captain." :laugh:Where the confusion might be is that everyone in new hire class for that base is getting a B757/B767 type rating because we will be international relief pilots. Most of the flights are over 8 hours, so it needs three pilots or more to do the trip legally. Delta flies these trips with one Captain and two First Officers. At some point, there are two first officers sitting in the seats while the Captain rests in the back. We are not the Captain but we need to be typed.
