Delta 5 day domestic trips

So on a recent DH, talked to a DL narrowbody domestic FO who was doing a 5 day trip.

How common is this?

I don't have any reason to think it would. If it's a five day worth 29.5 hrs it sounds like a good deal. The trips that go junior are the 10-11 hr 2-days, which will be going away.

We 744/330 trips that are 11 days.

There are plenty of five day trips. I do not see that going away. I would see it increasing and maybe six day domestic trips under the new FT/DT.

I have flown a ton of 5,6,8,9,11,12,14 day trips. The longer the trip is, the harder it is for them to fly you as much as the trip rig will pay you.

Now when you guys say "trip" does that include trips with domicile overnights? For example: ATL based guy, 5 day trip, day 3 overnight is in ATL.

People that commute seem to love them.

There are no domicile layovers that are prebuilt in to the rotations. There are NYC pilots that start out of LGA but overnight in JFK. Contractually you have to start and end at the same airport, so these trips are good for the commuters since they get a hotel room.

Other than that no domicile layos

On the WB you will see DTW 330 crews DH to JFK then fly two turns to Europe. 7ER crews fly to Europe then fly to CVG, MEM etc then back to Europe then back to CVG MEM, PIT, BOS etc then back to Europe. We also see six crossings back and forth to NRT from cities like SFO, PDX etc. 12 day intra Asia trips with a crossing on the front and back end.

There are tons of different combinations.

That's what I said, but the former NWA guys seem to love them. I was jumpseating with an MD-90 crew recently who were former NWA, and they were talking about how they missed the 5-day trips on the Airbus. Seemed weird to me, but everyone thinks I'm crazy for flying CDOs, so I don't judge.

I did a few 5 days on the 9 and on the bus while on reserve and frankly I don't see the appeal. In my experience they weren't commutable on either end so what's the point? Granted I was on reserve so I probably wasn't seeing a good representation of a "good" 5 day. But an uncommutable 5 day? Really?

NWA guys used to love 5 day trips because so many guys were commuters, but the trips were built differently and generally more appealing than they are now. NWA used to build them with late reports and single legs on the first day, a busy three days, then a quick one leg last day done in plenty of time to commute. You could get a full month with two 5's and a 3 or 4 and be done. We also didn't see a lot of 5 leg days. It was usually just 3, with the occasional 5. (I'm talking about the DC-9 in DTW back before 9/11). The ATL DC-9 bid pack right now is freakin' scary, with many 5 and 6 leg days. I guess the 717 will be about the same when it shows up.

It was mainly a commuter thing. I'd rather have a commutable 28 hour 5 day than a non commutable 29 hour 4 day that costs me two hotel rooms.

On the 727 in DTW the 5 days were great for commuters and about 80% commuted.
