Shares in Delta Airlines fell after the airline reported earnings that were soft of the analyst expectations, as strong fuel price pressure squeezed profits in the third quarter.

Excluding special items like fuel hedges, net profit fell 18% from a year ago to $765 million, or 91 cents per share. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting net income of 93 cents.

Jet fuel expenses shot up 42% to $2.88 billion. The higher fuel costs increased costs in the quarter by $1 billion, making the airline’s fuel hedging and price increases crucial to edge out profit during the quarter, and escape a loss like the one that its rival American Airlines reported last week.

“We are successfully adapting Delta to the challenging economic environment by producing a solidly profitable quarter in the face of $1 billion of fuel price pressure,” said CEO Richard Anderson.

Capacity weakened slightly, decreasing 1%. Higher ticket prices resulted in an 11% gain in the average fare per mile. Top-line revenue increased 10% to $9.8 billion.

The Atlanta-based company plans to update its fleet between 2013 and 2018 with orders for aircraft from Boeing.
Shares were down 3.7% after the earnings at $8.57.

You're right, SWA wasn't the only one to lose money unfortunately, AA lost some too. Sorry you guys, I hope you turn it around for the next quarter, and also start treating the trannies better.

Godspeed!

Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL: News ) on Tuesday reported a 51 percent increase in profit for the third quarter as strong revenue growth helped offset higher fuel costs and flat passenger traffic. However, excluding items, adjusted earnings missed analysts' expectations, while revenues topped their estimates.

The company's third-quarter net income was $549 million or $0.65 per share, up from $363 million or $0.43 per share in the year-ago period.

Any chance you can change your blah blah and give up on the SWA guys? It's old and way past embarrassing. Of course, if you're tanker clown's new screen name, keep up the good work making us look bad.

Um, perhaps you could elude us "public educated" folks how making a 1/2 billion dollar profit could be "the start of the end?"

Because ala United and Delta circa 2000, you guys will demand a 80% to 100% pay raise to catch up to SWA pay rates. At the same time, you will run out and cast your votes for Obama your hero just as the EU implodes taking the US economy with it. As usual, your timing and sense of economic proportion will take your company down as you have proven so adept at in the past. GO ALPA!!!
