What are most of the military types using for a conversion factor? I haven't used it yet but I will soon. Any thoughts? .2 or .3 per sorty? Thank you :)

Count it as PIC

The person who looked through my logbook stated I should count PIC for training flights at UPT.

Slightly different opinion...

Reference Scoreboard's post above. In the past according to the folks who do the logbooks I've been told not to use any of the "student" (UPT) time in your totals, particularly solo time as PIC. Most folks don't need the 185 hrs one gets to beef up one's hours & keeping student time out of it matches up with what civilians are asked to include as part of their PIC & total time. I'll re-check my sources & while I'm sure the interviewer who spoke to Scoreboard was doing a thorough check, the "official read" from the headshed I "think" (which is always dangerous) is slightly different. I'll follow up.

I included my UPT solo time as PIC (IMO someone had to be "in command" when the other seat was empty) and didn't come up against any problems during the interview. It only amounted to approx. 27 hours, was pretty insignificant compared with the TPIC numbers required. However, I prepared a revised "numbers sheet" that didn't include it if there was any question about it. The rest of UPT I logged off as "Dual." However, I would go with the OFFICIAL OPINION if Chase's research with the PD comes up with something different.

I hope this helps and good luck!!:D

Nothing "official" about chase

As has been stated by others above, logging your student time as part of your total time can get a variety of responses from the interviewers, from no big deal to the question did you include it? Solo student time = PIC time for your logbook. UPT time = total time.

My view toward the logbook is simple...eliminate any chances of questions or "hmmm...." during the logbook review. If you can defend it & wish to...go for it, if you need the hours and think xx hrs is going to be the difference then go right ahead & don't shortchange yourself by any means.

I am pretty certain though the definition of PIC does require one to be "qualified" in the aircraft so UPT solo time doesn't meet that criteria. Again your choice about including it in your logbook....just be prepared to defend it or what your response will be when asked "did you know you can't log student solo time as PIC?"

As to my "official" status....the PD are, have been & will always be the expert in this field. This board should never serve as a substitute for picking up the phone & simply calling the PD....they luv hearing from pilots who want to come to Southwest and are happy to help so don't neglect the "source"....call 'em!!! You're reading the ramblings of an 'ole FO and wouldn't presume to have the straight skinny on much other than my next report time!!! :)

SWA PEOPLE DEPARTMENT ROCKS!!!!!

Chase is correct again

Go conservative, have a hip pocket number for the conversion if they let you add it in.

So Chase, just finished IOE, Outstanding! One question, when are we going to put a cable in at Burbank and a tailhook on these things?

Scoreboard,

I just throw the emergency rope out the window when I go over the parking garage on the hill & wait for the tug on the rope...works everytime, always make the first turnoff!!! NOT!!!! I've had a go-around there coming from the north (I deducted some money from my profit sharing for it), the CA was overly kind to me...haven't come close since then....always be thinking "slow"...a little like the slamdunk at ONT.

Congrats on the IOE, welcome to your last job you ever have to interview for!!!

I just had 2 buddies get picked up on the last DB and they both included their stud solo time. I agree with JetDude that "someone has to be at the controls." However, I will have two sets of numbers just to be on the safe side. I don't want any "hmmms" in my future..:)

I couldn't agree more. Definitely go in with a "number sheer" that doesn't include the UPT solo time as PIC just to be safe. If it looks like you will have to defend your decision, pull out the new sheet. The last thing you want to do in an interview is get defensive for something which probably doesn't matter anyway. One would rather to spend the additional 5 minutes (needed to defend the numbers) talking about why they are good fit at Southwest. Just one opinion among many.:D
