HOUSTON, Feb. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today announced it was rated the most admired U.S. airline on FORTUNE magazine's America's Most Admired Companies airline industry list. The list and related stories appear in the March 6 issue, on newsstands Feb. 27, and at http://www.fortune.com .
Continental ranked No. 1 in several key categories on the list, including quality of products and services, quality of management, innovation, and social responsibility.
"We are honored to have been named America's most admired airline," said Larry Kellner, Continental's chairman and CEO. "It is a direct reflection on my 42,000 co-workers, who are truly the reason for Continental's success. Despite the challenges facing the industry, our employees continue to deliver a world-class product with outstanding service, day in and day out."
The rankings are determined in a survey of industry analysts, boards of directors, and corporate and airline executives. They survey eight areas, including quality of products and services, quality of management, innovation, social responsibility, financial soundness, employee talent, use of corporate assets, and long-term investment value.
Southwest Airlines was ranked second on the list, followed by AMR, Alaska Air Group, ExpressJet Holdings, America West Holdings, Northwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, UAL and US Airways Group.

To create the top 20 and overall list of Most Admired Companies, Hay Group asked the 10,000 executives, directors, and securities analysts who had responded to the industry surveys to select the ten companies they admired most. They chose from a list made up of the companies that ranked among the top 25% in last year's survey, plus those that finished in the top 20% of their industry. Anyone could vote for any company in any industry. The difference in the voting rolls is why some results can seem anomalous -- for example, FedEx is one of the top ten Most Admired Companies but only second in its own industry.

But we finished 2nd in the Airline group, as that voting bloc was made up of only the Airline folks.

To create the 65 industry lists, Hay asked executives, directors, and analysts to rate companies in their own industry on eight criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. This year only the best are listed as most admired: A company's score must rank in the top half of its industry survey. Ranks for the rest of the contenders are available online only.

Not that I would put much stock in such pols, but please lets not ignore that big elephant in the number 2 position.

I have lots of good friends that work for SWA, so this isn't a slam but just to point out:

CAL has not furloughed since 2001
We have recalled all those furlougheed both FAs and Pilots plus,
we are hiring 500 pilots this year and 700 FAs

I realize SWA has never furloughed and
The employees like to "HELP management out" to keep cost down

Essentailly that is what our concessionary contract was all about- $500 million in ANNUAL savings for the company.

SWA is a great airline but comparing the two is like apples to oranges.

There are more differences than similarities. Besides does anyone reallly care who is most admired and least. I don't.
 
You will only know the right choice was made after the last flight and you hang the uniform up for good at 65. Today's darlings can be tomorrows dogs.

Note, I purposely put the 65 in there to rile up the age 60 threads again.

And what is interesting is that although FedEx and Southwest were the No 2 and 3 Most Admired Companies, neither won their own category.

Why would anyone "admire" an airline when the only thing that differentiates them is paint color? When people choose an airline because it pops up cheapest on Travelocity, it tells me there ain't much to admire.
 
If you haven't flown on CAL on a longer domestic flight then you wouldn't be able to differentiate. CAL serves meals(hot ones) even in coach to this day on longer flights(2 hours plus at mealtime). I've gained a good 5 pounds on the 737 eating both First Class and coach meals offered by the FA's. Was surprised how good the first class meals were although I'm sure I'll get sick of them. Having real napkins and silver and glass salt&pepper shakers on a tray full of soup/salad/beef/mashed potatoes/vegetables/rasberry tart for dessert was new to me. And this was on a 2 hour domestic trip from EWR to a city in the Southeast. From EWR to STI the other day we had a huge breakfast that included our choice of an omlete or french toast with several sides and a huge fruit plate. But enough about food.

Ok,

I can watch a movie on CAL. I can get food at meal time on CAL. I get a comfortable seat on CAL. I don't have to look granny in the eyes for an hour on CAL. I can get first class on CAL. I can go international on CAL. I get nothing on SWA but some crazy FA trying to be funny in cackys.

Nothing personal. Just no-frills vs. frills.

Hey man just quotting some buds that work over there and do drink th Kool-aid. They actually take shitfor not picking up open time and for mocking guys that fly their asses off to"help out the company". One bud said he got chewed out while looking at another guys board? and commenting why he had so many trips and few days off. Just the messenger here.

Again we both know you can't really compare the two. Way too many differences.
 
Congrats to CAL. There is a difference, and ppl ought to getsomething different when they fly a "full service" airline. The expereince should be better than what we offer - CAL seems to have rediscovered their strength.

It also has nothing to do with job satisfaction. We offer a great product at a great price. I am treated well every day (even if my board is empty this month).

I'm sure it is great to work at CAL too - although I suspect my "happy go lucky" attitude, backpack, frosted hair and guitar would be less welcome ....
 
Did you notice SWA had a 3 rank next to quality of product. I would imagine it's because everytime I have to DH I'm sitting in trash not picked up by the FAs. Someone really needs to lay down the law on our ever increasing disgustingness of our aircraft.

Thanks and you seem to be more like the average SWA pilot I know......However I was surprised myself at how many guitar toten guys I fly with..great for long flight and something to do on the long overnights....as for the hair unless its gray or you are a 20 something new hire I can't say.

You're being a d!ck. He has every bit as much right to post here as you do.

DH2WN was making a very valid point. NO ONE is protected in this industry. If SWA doesn't keep its planes clean AND keep up the on time service, they will start to slip.

Your condescending attitude is identical to that of many of the AA, UA and DAL pilots 5 1/2 years ago. Those who refuse to learn from history...TC

P.S.--I AM a player here. My company spends a BUNCH of money on SWA. That can change overnight. I've said this many times here--I have immense respect for SWA people. They made my life much easier when I commuted on them for 15 years. But the newhires need to adopt the attitude that got SWA where it is. The "silver spoon" arrogance will kill any airline...
