Really. I thought that CA hired about 2000 in 1982 and United hired 500 in 1985.

I really have never checked the facts though.

I think there's still a lot more at CAL than there ever was at UAL. I think CAL had about 2200 of them at the beginning, and a little less than half that are still there. I could be wrong though.

EDIT: According to "the list" there were originally 2,002 SCABs at CAL and 928 at UAL. I believe a good number of them left UAL shortly after everything was settled and most of the CAL SCABs stayed, so CAL should have quite a few more. I talked to a IAH 737 driver a few years ago who said it was pretty much impossible to avoid flying with them down in IAH.

That's an unfair characterization of an entire pilot group. The overwhelming majority of CAL pilots are not scabs and do not deserve to be characterized as such.

Well put, and I agree. After posting it, I realized that many good CAL pilots would be lumped in with those of less integrity. Perhaps that is the single most insidious danger in allowing scabs on ones property. Guilt through association.

I have very strong feelings about both groups who comprise their workforce.
Tremendous admiration, and unbridled disdain. Sorry if my feelings for the latter harmed any of the former.

dude who gives a rats azz at this point. 2005 - 1982 = 23 years.

If these guys were all hired at Kit Darby's official age of 35 (unlikely if they were scabs, CAL would have been airline job #2 or #3 at that point), these guys are all 58+ by now.

move on

we used to hate the Japanese in 1940's but we got over that too

Not necessarily true. During the EAL strike in '89 Lorenzo (aka Satan) sent out letters to a large portion of the pilots in south Florida that held Comm certs offering them jobs at Eastern if they wanted them. These guys had VERY low time and some of them were pretty young at the time. Some of the pilots on the list have their DOB listed and a good number of them are still in their 40s. SCABs don't have to have the same quals that rEAL pilots do, so it could very well be their first airline. Frankie Lorenzo would take just about anyone that would keep his airplanes moving.

Funny as this is, the point is well taken. F. Lorenzo has wrought much damage throughout our industry. Many short sighted opportunists have aided and abetted his efforts. Time does not heal all wounds. It simply diminishes our memories and fervor.
With no intention of comparing the tragedies involved, one mantra truly fits both.
"Never forget"
I for one, will not.

How can CO be hiring as many pilots as they say if they are so close to a liquidity crises? According to Investment houses anyway with perspective reports on CO stock and company info. Maybe the info is incorrect. Can anyone shed some light on this?

The liquidity crisis was supposedly solved with the $418MIL the company received in the form of concessions.

That's pretty hypocrytical there since you paid $18,000 to a scab at Gulfstream. You know that guy who runs Gulfstream is an Eastern scab right?

CAL has one of the oldest pilot groups around...losing approx half of the current pilot group in the next 10 years

Hey Slow to 250,

I have a question. How do you reconcile ALPA coming back on the property in June of 2001? Does ALPA national harbor such ill will towards the scabs? Apparently not. As long as one shows them the money (dues) they seem to be fine with it.

Oh.....I would say your assessment of ALPA's motives are right on the money. (pun intended). There was a time when the esteemed organization actually carried some weight, but that has been a while. Say about 1990....when I packed up my picket sign and went home.

In defense of their now rather toothless posturing, I would contend that a variety of circumstances in the marketplace have conspired to render them less effective, in their quest to represent pilot interests.

As far as how I feel about them coming back to CAL, IMHO the renewed affiliation bodes well for both parties. Unfortunately, many scabs will also share in the hard earned benefits that define ALPA's role in our once proud industry.

But, WTF do I know. Im just a pile-it. :)

Yes, I know that now but I didn't at the time. They don't exactly put it in the brochure.
