jetflyer, i'd be on the phone with them everyday if i was you.

i know people that interviewed in march that started class on monday.

seniority is at stake...

interview date

Jetflyer,
I interviewed Jan 31 but turned down two prior class dates due to mil duty so I'm not really a good indicator of which group of interviewees is getting called. It seems like you should be getting the call soon if you interviewed in Feb. I would definitely keep calling them. Good luck!
Otto

I call everyday and always get a voicemail. Understandably, no one returns my calls...I bet they're swamped. Is there any trick to getting a live voice?

I really want to find out how many people will be in each class. I interviewed 3/21 and am curious if july classes will extend that far into the pool. Is it safe to assume they'll be 2 more classes in august?

Classes

I'll keep my eyes open on the company website for future class dates...

Otto...did you have 1300 hours when you got hired? Seems kind of low for Comair these days, I was just wondering if they took into account your military experience. I'm trying to get a mil buddy of mine hired and he is around the same time.

Anaconda,
I actually had just over 1,000 back when I was hired (January) and I must admit I was a little surprised to get the interview call with the market being what it is. I told the guy who called me for the interview that I was surprised and he said they've had a really good experience with herc guys and their ability to work with a crew (I guess a crew of five will do that to you) versus single seat guys. True, the total time is lower but almost all of it is multi-turbine. He said that, combined with the experience of flying all over the world makes the disparity in experience less than it may appear. I'm sure there will be those that argue (been down that road before on this board) but I do feel truly blessed to have this job. So to answer your question, yes they did take the military experience into account but only because it was multi-engine crew. If you have a bud in the same boat, I think he would have a good chance. Good luck!
Otto

thanks for the response otto, and welcome aboard. my bud flies the king air, but in around the world opns so i'm hoping it will be looked upon favorably.

see you in cvg...i finally start on the jet in late august myself...

I talked to Kathy or Linda (don't remember which one gave me this information since I have talked to both recently) about upcoming class dates for those of us who interviewed in May. I mentioned that with the ending of stop-loss, it seemed that our class dates would be in Jan or Feb. She said that they try to keep a mixture in the classes - that is, a certain percentage of Comair instructors, a percentage of military, and a percentage of other. From what she said, I gathered, as they are released, the military hires will have to wait to get into a class. The good news for those of us civilians awaiting a class date is, the ending of stop-loss apparently won't flood the classes.

If it sounds like I have no sympathy for the military, I apoligize. I do. I served enough time (non-flying) for a retirement and I know how the military can take advantage of you. On the other hand, those kept on active duty for stop-loss are still pulling down a paycheck (a pretty substancial one) while I have been unemployed and out of the cockpit for 6+ months with a wife and three kids to support. No violins, just wanted those military people who are trying to get released and finding their class date being pushed back for people who interviewed much later to understand.

Good luck to all and hope to see you in class soon.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but I'm very unfamiliar with the millitary. What's the "stop-loss"...I'm a little unclear on what that's about...

Also, did she agree that you wouldn't go to class until next winter? I would have guessed a lot sooner than that.

Take care.

STOPLOSS= MILITARY SAYS "YOU BE HERE FOUR HOUR, YOU DON'T GO NOW.......".....

meaning, in order for the active duty folks to fly for an airline they need to be released......well, when a stop loss is in effect, there are no retirements allowed.....or people just wanting to get out......

as for Comair, I think the mil subject pertains to not only those dealing with stoploss, but those of us that were in the Reserves/Guard but were activated because of 9/11 and unable to perhaps take our first class date because of being still activated.

BNA/ Military Class Dates

Anaconda,
I like to remain anonymous but I can tell you that I'm not in the BNA guard unit and I can tell you that RichO is not as well (yes...we all talk to each other :) ). Not sure why you're asking but I do know a guy in that unit I could put you in touch with if you need a contact.

Tri-holer...I understand your frustration with the military guys suddenly becoming available but I think Comair has actually worked out a pretty fair system, keeping a percentage of mil and civillian guys in each class. True, the activated Guard/Reserve guys have been getting a steady paycheck but they have been forced to go places and be away from their families against their will and many of these guys interviewed well over a year ago. Many of them would gladly have given up that paycheck to have control over their lives again and be in a position to start with an airline. They interviewed a long time ago...is it fair that they should take a number behind someone who interviewed a year later? They could make the point that though you've been unemployed at an airline, you at least had the freedom to pursue other career avenues. I really do understand your point however, and in a situation like this you can't make everyone happy. I think, however, they have come up with the best solution they could. I hope you can start soon...good luck!

Otto,

Congrats and welcome aboard!!!! Just to give you a heads up you transfer control of your life from Uncle Sam to Crew Scheduling. LOL

Other than that it isn't a bad place to be. See ya on line!!

Shafted

I was able to talk to Linda on Friday....

10 in the July 8th class
12 in the July 15th class

There will be another class August 5th or thereabouts. Classes are tentatively 2x/month from here on, but they're taking it on a month to month basis.

It sounded like it was pretty unlikely for anyone beyond the beginning of march to have a class date yet. Anybody who interviewed in late march, or early may (i don't think they interviewed in april??? correct me if i'm wrong) should be in class by the end of september as long as they keep getting their jets on schedule.

Time to go pay hommage to the mono Gods.....why me. I guess August doesn't sound so bad anymore ;-)

Congtratulations to all who received the good news recently.

Regarding new hire training in the 70 seater...it probably won't happen any time soon. The company recently issued a secondary vacancy bid for the 70 seater. If I remember accurately, they need an additional 10 F/Os for that airplane. Some of those who bid the first time around, didn't do so this time.

If there is not a sufficient number from the secondary bid, they will be junior manned. My guess is they will come from those who are currently line qualified.

Fly safe!

Class numbers

10 in the July 8th class
12 in the July 15th class

That's too bad about the numbers...I talked to them awhile back and they indicated each class would have 20+. I guess things have changed a bit. I hope everyone in the pool can start soon! Is anyone else here in the 8th class?

There were interviews in April, one of my Academy grad buddies is in the July 15 class from the April interview. The hiring team was at the Academy last week and mentioned they had a "soft" schedule of 3 classes in Aug, and a "soft" schedule of exclusive Brasilia, and maybe 70 seater classed in Sep with a resumption of new hire classes in Oct.

I had a chance to fly two of the interview captains around in one of our new Seminoles; whatta blast they were! Introduced them to GPS approaches!

Sleeping 'till 2 and not drawing much of a paycheck is getting to be a bummer. Maybe I'll crawl back underground at Los Alamos and suck up some more rads in the name of national defense...at least it's decent pay!

I was told they were taking people in order of their interview dates, so I'm confused as to how an academy guy from the April interviews got a class date in July, when there are a bunch of March new-hires still waiting on a class date.

Confused...

As far as I know, they are taking in order. But I think there is a slot or two in each class for CAA grads in order of our interviews, too. It's still PFM to me, too! Hope we all get a class date, soon, or at least some idea of when it'll be!!

What do you think will be the last class of the year for Comair? And how soon in the new year will there be classes?

RichO-

You've got me confused now. What do you mean by-

What do you think will be the last class of the year for Comair? And how soon in the new year will there be classes?

Do you have some information from the company?

Thanks for the clarification.

Oh, actually don't have an heart attack yet....I was just curious as too when the last class date for the year 2002 might be. With the holidays in Nov/Dec/Jan, I'm curious if they will slow the class schedule during the holidays or if they will keep it full speed.......and if they do, then when will be the first class of the new year.......

I see now.

Unfortunately a career in the airlines means there is no such thing as a holiday. Most training cycles go right through the holidays except for maybe having Christmas day off. I would have to look at the contract to see if the instructors have something about not working during specific holidays.

If there are IOE instructors flying on a holiday, they will schedule IOE for the new hires. At least that was how it was at my previous job.

Hope that clears it up for you.

From the contract-

Holidays
i. Except for IOE, line checks or contract training, a Full Time Instructor Pilot will not be scheduled for duty on Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s Day. Training will not be scheduled to end later than 1300 on Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve or to begin prior to 0500 the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s Day.

Good, I was hoping that they wouldn't slow the training classes down during the holidays.......of course, having a few days off for Christmas wouldn't be bad.......

Has anyone from the later march interviews heard anything? I too find it bizarre that guys are getting class dates from april interviews? Can anyone spare a quarter?
