Clarification of CO's time requirements

Continental's website states this:

"1,000 hours fixed-wing PIC time, or 500 hours PIC time and 500 hours SIC time in a turbojet"

Does that mean they want 500 PIC turbojet and 500 SIC turbojet or 500 PIC in anything and 500 SIC turbojet? ie: Do you meet the requirements if you have no turbine PIC time?

You do not need turbine PIC or turbojet time to meet the minimums. You need 1,000 hours fixed wing PIC time UNLESS you have 500 hours SIC turbojet, in which case you only need 500 hours fixed wing PIC.

A recommendation.

Don't know how much you know about their hiring practices, but if you know much..... say I meet all the requirements but don't have anything turbine PIC or anything else too exciting, but I do have 2-3 recommendations from CO pilots. Do I stand a chance?

It is understandable that the hiring folks want to know more about you than just the application. That's what they they were told in HR degree classes in college.

The recommendations could be from ANY CAL employee (doesn't have to be a pilot).
Also, they will except recommendations on your behalf from people not affiliated with CAL. Anyone you worked with, flown with, college professors, high school teachers etc.
The more the better and the more variety of backgrounds and longer time of knowing you the better.

They want as complete picture of you as possible.
 
Seriously? They'll take 1500TT?

Of course dude...what do you think most younger type (0-3 to 0-4) fighter guys have? Around 1500 TT or so...and they realize the quality of your time when you're flying a high performance jet but only get a 1.0 per sortie. They are also looking for guys that know how to flare...

Yeah it is mostly fighter guys and RJ Fo's that are in that crowd. That crowd is by far the minority. From what I have heard both groups (Fighter/RJ) eventually catch up with the jet, the dynamic CRM environment and major airline operations.
 
Now to actually be competitive, what do you need?

I've been told that the MAJORITY of competitive interviewees have 5-6000 hours of Turbine Time with 2-3000 hours of Turbine PIC.

There will be exceptions to the rule but they are in the MINORITY.

And that is why you hear about them; because "Did you hear so-and-so got hired and that fool didn't have any PIC time?" is a lot more emotionally imflammatory than "Did you hear that CA so-and-so got hired? I can't believe he's leaving after flying the RJ for 11 years with 9 in the left seat!" :p

I was also told that they are hiring about 80% of the guys they interview these days.
 
About 65%

I was told the hire ratio was down to about 65% from 80%. For what its worth. Apparently the pool is getting less qualified as more companys begin to hire. Just what I heard.

Sorry, I can't resist - I've got to throw another spear at this post...especially coming from an RJ F/O that might as well be wearing size 15 floppy red shoes. Instructorde - what exactly do you mean by the "dynamic CRM" enviornment? Do you mean reading the entire Sport's section from the USA Today during a transcon from Newark to LA or do you mean listening to a fat, balding captain about his 3rd ex wife that just turned 23 and is currently living in Argentina and can't speak English? Inquiring minds want to know...especially coming from your vast experience and knowledge of CRM.

You know what I mean ScrappyDoo. A lot things go on up there in the cockpit and its how you handle this stuff as a team make it CRM. It is dynamic cause stuff changes a lot. You could be landing at Kansas City on the right runway and then all of sudden tower changes you to the left and you have to change things like ILS freqs and recheck your landing data. This is the teamwork I am trying to explain to about. It's not an insult but fighter guys haven't been involved in an environement like this before. It is not like you can't learn it though. Most fighter guys overcome this weakness with their strong work ethics and get up to speed. It's not a insult though.

Right. I know a fighter guy (actually an A-10 guy) who had his canopy un-ass itself climbing out of FL200 while he was in a four ship.

Two of the guys on his wing did top to bottom, front to rear damage assessment while the third guy ran appropriate checklists via radio with the aircraft in trouble b/c he wasn't able to fly the airplane and run the stuff himself due to the wind. These guys used teamwork and weren't even sitting in the same cockpit together.

Landed safely sans cockpit. Seems a lot more demanding than a last second runway change. Silly military pilots who don't know what CRM is......

Ha Ha Ha Ha! Now that's funny! I've flown with all types and I can't recall a time when I thought to myself "Man that guy has some serious skills! He must have flown one of those 'high performance' jets!"

By the way which ANG unit currently flies the raptor?

Are you f'ing serious??? OH MY GOD, They changed runways!!! You don't have a clue dude. I'd flame away, but it would all be over your head. A prowler crew does more CRM on one sortie than you'll do all year.

I loved how you said "catch up to the jet." Whens the last time you saw 510 IAS under 1K', during a section low lever ingress and pop up attack. 250 under 10K and they changed runways! I'm so far behind!

It's not CRM that's the issue, it's probably just that guys get sick of you, and actually CAN do it themselves without you.

Scrapdude is running multiplane intercepts above 60K' and Mach 1.5, and you're saying "catch up." Holy crap I can't stop laughing.

Spend $100 for an associate membership to OBAP. That will get you in fast.
 
What the hell were A-10s doing at FL200, were they lost. Military guys are no better or no worse. Each is an individual case by case just like any other civilian. That is funny about catching up though....bad example. Try another route.
