My CFI is expiring this month. This is the first time ever that I cannot renew it on the basis of being a check airman. I keep getting these online courses ads in the mail. Any advice on these, which is best, are they worth it ?
Thanks

You won't be disappointed. TRUST ME.

You can knock it out in a couple of hours over the course of several days. They'll even file all the paperwork for you. It's quick and easy.

I've got the lifetime renewal with American Flyers (pay once, use it every time for no additional cost)...and I still pay for other services each time. It's that poor.

I've used the Jeppesen renewal; it's fine. AOPA had one, but I think it was the Jeppesen course...worked fine. The Gleim one is good. Anything but the Americal Flyers, course, in fact.

I just used the Jeppesen/AOPA one last month. They file all the paperwork for you as well, just have to print some things, get them notarized and mail them to AOPA. It's pretty good. If you've been renewing on the basis of being a check airman, there's going to be a lot of new stuff (unless you do a lot of GA flying on the side). Last time around I renewed based on being a 135 instructor, but before that I had used Jeppesen also. During the four years in between, they seem to have added a lot more acronyms!

I was a big fan of the American Flyers program because of the pay once, use forever concept.

Used Gleim this year though and wasn't disappointed.

The material is good and you can keep it as others have pointed out. If you want to bend the rules you can finish it in under 2hrs. They also toss in an FSSA certificate and a free ground instructor endorsement if you are out of currency on it.

I used Gleim for my last two renewals. Was very happy both times. Can't remember the price, I think it was around $90 or so, but I could be wrong.

I use American Flyers lifetime renewal bought it about 6 years ago. Call your local FSDO when done and their ops inspectors can do your renewal online and Email your temporary.

I took the Jeppesen one back in June with my time off (Sr. reserve @ TSA before the mass furloughs) and did it in three days (while on home reserve mind you).

I'd use them next time but I actually think I'm going to go with the Gleim since its a little cheaper and highly recommended.

tl;dr - The Jepp got the job done and was pretty cool.

The FAA offices I'm familiar with say the rule requiring that an airline pilot be a check airman have changed. Now it's just any Part 121 or Part 135 captain, or so they say.

Ref: FSIMS 8900.1

C. Section 61.197(a)(2)(ii). Individuals have asked FAA about the intent of the statement, “in a position involving the regular evaluation of pilots” in § 61.197(a)(2)(ii) and whether it has the same meaning as the old provision in § 61.197(b) . The FAA rewrote § 61.197 to expand the renewal provisions, mainly to include other PICs . For example, the following PICs , who regularly evaluate pilots, have the same reward provisions as a PIC in a part 121 operation:

· A PIC of a multiple pilot flightcrew aircraft under part 135 ,
· Corporate PICs of a multiple pilot flightcrew aircraft under part 125 or 133 ,
· U.S. military pilots who are PICs of a multiple pilot flightcrew aircraft,
· U.S. military instructor pilots and examiners who regularly evaluate pilots under part 125 or 133 , and
· Flight instructors who actively instruct in part 61 schools.
NOTE: FAA ASIs should review evidence of the applicant’s employment, which should clearly show that the applicant is in a position involving the regular evaluation of pilots. ASIs also should have personal knowledge of the applicant’s flight instructing capabilities and qualities before renewing that applicant’s flight instructor certificate.
