At least he didn't croak, now that would be a PITA trying to get him to sign the temp cert before you report the problem ;)

Man, that's brutal and outright cruel!

Regardless if you know them or not, as a CFI, you always double-check the regs anyways, before you send your student up for a checkride, solo, etc. to make sure you got everything covered.
