ETOPS 7E7,

Just curious if those salaries you posted reflect the 1st year pay or are they the max pay on the freighter side of the operations?

Do you also have any salary info for the passenger ops. It seems like you have the choice to stay on the frieghter side if you wish and wondering what the advantage is off making the jump to passenger ops?

Also, where do you normally fly the freighters to? and what is your quality of life like?

Thanks for the info.

Underpants back me up

That's ALL what i have.

Capt's pay: between USD 113,472 – 152,736
F/O pay : between 61,308 – 103,428
The salaries are lower in the pax side, and you'll be flying as a relief pilot/SO for a while and HK is your base.

As of the cargo routes:

JFK-ANCHORAGE-HK
ORD-ANC-HK
LAX-ANC-HK
LAX-SAN-ANC-HK
SAN-VANCOUVER-ANC-HK

ETOPS and Boz

ETOPS, where did you possibly get the info that "salaries are lower on the pax side"? B-S. The salaries are at least 40% HIGHER on the pax side. Do you even work for CX?

Underpants

No i don't work for CX, but i heard that starting FO in the cargo side makes more money then starting SO in the pax side. Is that not true?

Cpt. Underpants,

I assume you work for Cathay? Can you post the salaries or should I just do the math. Anyway, can you shed some insight on life and work rules at Cathay? Any info is appreciated.

ETOPS and Scaggs

Apples and Apples. F/O Freighter earns about the same as S/O Pax (if you take S/O allowances into account).

F/O Freighter earns 40% less than F/O Pax.
Capt Freighter earns 40% less than Capt Pax.

Sorry I can't give you a straight answer on salary. There are presently 17 different conditions of service in CX, and I know mine.

Hong Kong Taxes flat rated at 16%.

Non-Converging B scale for all hirees after Feb 1 1994.

More types on pax fleet (Freighter = B74F, Pax = A330-300, A340-300, A340-600, B777-200, B777-300, B744), many more destinations with pax aircraft and access to cookie chuckers if you like that sort of thing.

I am not a freighter puke, but I see from the rosters that if you are on the freighter, North America based, you will fly to HKG, NRT, ANC, YVR, SFO, LAX, ORD, JFK and YYZ. Europe based F jocks fly to Europe, Middle East and HKG, Oz based to OZ and NZ, and so on. N American F jocks do not fly to OZ or Europe except on type training.

Quality of life? Relative, really. The reason that CX makes money is because there are no free rides here. Your days of swapping to fly nothing or barely maintain recency are over. 85 hours a month, month in, month out (~3 ULH trips a month). Each trip about 5 days, that leaves about half the month off. Hotac is good, allowances (paid in cash, non taxable) are good, company SOP's are good, facilities in HKG and out ports are good, Ops Centre is good, training is good.

The only "downside" is that CX is not as touchy-feely as you are used to, there is a lot HR in CX could learn but in general, if you rationalize your relationship with CX (with ANY employer, in fact) you will be very happy.
