There was a fatal crash on Catalina island last Thursday.

According to the Los Angeles Times article and update, the pilot died as did his two passengers. The pilot was the President of a charter company but held only a private ASEL certificate with an instrument rating.

Anyone familiar with this operation?

I didn't see a cetificate number anywhere on the web site. I wonder if he was doing this as a local tour type of thing staying within 25 nm of departure airport. If that's the case, I believe Catalina is just outside the range. We'll see what the feds say. The LGB FSDO should have authority over this. I wonder if Skyblue had a drug testing program, although one was not needed if purely sightseeing within 25nm.

Read all the posted comments following the LATimes Story.

Seems he had been flying for way, too, long to only recently received a 'Private'. Although, this is how the records would reflect if he held higher ratings and got busted and lost those "PRIVILEGES"? The Private License issuance is actually a "RE issuance" of only Private Pilot Privileges, possibly?

In any case, bad move across the board doing Point to Point transport. It appears one of the Passengers was from Idaho and unlikely held any prior relationship with the owner before the flight.
