I know I am going to get ridiculed for saying this: A standup is continuous duty where you usually have some sort of break where you can catch some sleep. So basically you are working nights and you get to take a 2.5 hour nap. It is no different than working for a night cargo operation only those guys don't get a nap. I feel the FAA rules do a descent job of preventing fatigue amongst pilots. However Mesa as a company should change their schedule so it is not so brutal. Even Great Lakes puts their pilots up in a hotel on a standup.

The newsclip was WFAA, aren't they in Dallas, TX?
Mesa isn't very big in Dallas, they only have a couple of the barbie jets going back and forth from PHX flying for America West, right?
Now that ASA has left DFW, Eagle I think is the only regional based there.
I guess I'm wondering why a Dallas station would feature a story about Mesa

Soverytired,

I hope you're one of those dorks that has to sleep on the plane! Have fun numbn*ts!
By the way, all regionals suck, but they suck WORSE because of MESA and their crappy contract. It's been the case for a long time now that MESA set the precedent for all other mngt types to follow i.e. create an alter ego, bend the pilots over, it won't take much, they'll do it just like MESA, then accept said scabs onto their list - no repercussions!!

MESANITES couldn't wait to race to the bottom, who knew that would mean saving JO the price of a hotel on an overnight.

By the way, if you don't like it, vote with your feet, because ALPA isn't gonna do sh!t about this, apart from lining up another ALPA group to compete for your work!

Who cares who it is, the truth is that we all know that the duty regs are flawed, part 121 and part 135. Crash after crash has proved that fatigue kills. Instead of bashing each other sholdn't we be uniting to get the regulations that allow this kind of behavior by companies to be legal? If the regs allow it, of course companies will take advantage of it. This is after all a business and the people running it only care about one thing, the bottom line. Every other business is the same way. This is why we have laws and regulations. We rely entiely too much upon contracts and unions to protect us from such behavior. We all see that this isn't working! I'm not saying that it does not help at all, but obviously the regs need to be changed, not just one companie's contract.

why is everyone crying? nothing has been done about this since the wright brothers took off and nothing will be done untill we all retire. so quit crying or go work at a walmart distrubution center

I wasn't aware that the Wright brothers flew under 121 regulations. Good attitude. It definately never will change, thinking like that.

P.S. Is the WalMart distribution center still hiring?

I'm crying about crash after crash that are related to fatigue.

Don't like Mesa? I get it dude, I get it. This is flightinfo, after all. This is hardly a unique opinon.

That dosen't change the fact that the FAR 121 regs are fundamentally flawed by allowing this to happen. You can negotiate the best contract in the world, and it can all be dumped if the company declares BK and makes everyone sleep on the plane..

FAR 121 changes are necessary to prevent what I think are unscrupulous and unsafe scheduling practices. It's a safety issue, not a "You (and your poor passengers) deserve it because I don't like Mesa" issue.

Ironically, never one at Mesa. Never a crash, and certainly never due to fatigue.

Apparently there have been a few close calls with guys falling asleep at the wheel on the CDO's. Keep hearing one about one FLT going to Canada that was intercepted by the CAF because they were both asleep. Anyone heard this?

You guys have to drag the company names into this battle. There have been crashes because of fatigue, and if you read my post I clearly state that is does not matter if it is part 121 or part 135. It also does not matter who the company was, one crash do to fatigue is one too many. This is why if you are tired you must call fatigued. It is also why people that call in fatigued when they are not make the entire industry more dangerous.

Been trying to get a confirmation on this one for more than a year. Supposedly the CAF got close enough to set off the TCAS. Not sure if it's true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I do these shifts way too much . . .the crap I've seen, and the NASA reports I've filled out . . . and I know for a fact I'm FAR better prepared than most crews are for these because I KNOW know what to expect and plan accordingly.

Fatigue, by it's very nature, is insidious. For all you yahoo's out there who say "call fatigued" . . . well, I"m here to tell you you can be fine at takeoff, and dead tired 2 hours into the flight. At this point, you're kinda out of options.

Mesa Air Group (NASDAQ: MESA) is a Phoenix, Arizona-based commercial aviation holding company that operates three regional airline subsidiaries: Mesa Airlines, Freedom Airlines, and Air Midwest, and five supporting subsidiaries.

The CEO of Air Midwest at the time of the crash, Greg Stephens has been promoted to head of Mesa's Go! Airlines in Hawaii. The entities are technically seperate, but all part of mother MAG.

Didn't a Frontier crew fall asleep after a standup? I believe they were woken up by the FA at FL340 about 40 miles from DIA. This may be rumor, but I have had many F9 empolyees confirm this.

I have not read all of this thread, but has anyone mentioned the MESA camping trips in Canada where the crews have to leave the a/c and they camp in baggage claim in the sleeping bags, that also has happened, not sure if it still does.

Yeah, that would be the lovely Edmonton and Calgary overnights. These were actually scrapped . . lots of FATIGUE calls on these, so some pilots think it was a "Win", but I think it's just because mainline took them over.

Edmonton has a nice little passenger observation area with lots of comfy seats that you can push together, throw a blanket/sleeping bag over your head, and sleep in a little fort! Yippie!

Calgary . . . . not so nice. Airport security took a dim view of our crews sleeping in the open . . . once had a fo miss a departure time because he fell asleep hiding behind a potted plant and nobody knew where he was . . .

Can't believe MESA left their employees homeless in a foreign country overnight, without even a plane to sleep in! They should have thumbed a ride to the nearest homeless shelter.

I heard that they wouldnt set an alarm clock, they would just wait for their passengers to trip over them as they came throught the doors at 5 am.

Soverytired, this isnt directed at you, so dont take offense. But I think out of the few years ive been reading stuff on this website, that is probably the most pathetic thing I have read here. I mean, FO's sleeping behind potted plants in an airline terminal, making sleeping forts out of chairs? Seriously.

When the crews sleep in the terminal, do they change clothes in the bathroom and sleep in jammies? You know, the ones with the little footies to keep your feet warm? How is the FO supposed to hook up with the FA if their sleeping in the terminal?

None taken. Mesa is what it is. If there is any point (beyond theraputic venting) for my even posting this crap it's a bit of warning to other regional pilots . . . Mesa has "paved the way", so for God's sake anticipate this crap in your next contract and negotiate accordingly. It CAN happen to you.

Oh . . . no jammies in the airport. Have seen a couple of busty flight attendants strip down to the bra and put on their jammies on the plane. I just love kids today . . . no sense of modesty or propriety . . .

Mmmmm . . . . boobies .. . . .

Some pilot groups are getting more pro-active with the media.

Ignoramus!

Well Thats what happens when your CEO is a Jew! So someone please invent a time machine so we can transport J.O back to 1940 Germany.

This FFDO Jew hopes he shares the cockpit with you some day, oops, I don't know how the gun went off sir, It's o.k. though he is better off dead the EFFIN NAZI!

Unbelievable. Really, that's unbelievable.

That sort of "commentary" make me want to throw up.

GO AWAY.
