Why would CAL want to merge with UAL. They stink! CAL would be better off to let UAL shut down and then buy some assets... UAL is a dying brand, it will join Pan Am and Eastern soon.

UAL is the greatest brand the airline business has ever seen.

If UAL fails the entire United States of American airline industry is in trouble.

Do you really have to ask why?

There is money to be made in the DEAL business. It has nothing to do with good airline/bad airline. It's all about the $$$$$ to be made from the DEAL. Get it yet?

Before you guys jump all over Lucky - He said "UAL is the greatest BRAND"

not the greatest pilots,
not the greatest management,
not the greatest anything else.

Now, I would argue that PanAm and TWA were greater brands at one time. Brands known by nearly everyone in the world. They're gone. No one is above the fray.

WHAT? UAL folks are mostly strange. They have had strange hiring practices in the past, hired lots of weird folks (I have met a lot of them).

Sorry, but they need to give up. They lost a lot of money. Stop now and liquidate, it will help the industry. They need to take one for the team

Thanks for the kind words. This is quickly turning into 02/03/04 again. Which piece of UAL do you want for your carrier? First dibs and it's yours.
Pacific routes? AMR.
Atlantic routes? Continental
Everything domestic? Southwest
747s - Delta
777s - Continental
75/767s - USAirways
737s - Southwest
A319/320s - JetBlue
There. Did I save you a little time?

Too bad UAL paid off almost $3B in debt last year, allowing them to borrow against the assets that are now unencumbered. It'll keep 'em alive for a little longer. On the bright side, that'll allow guys like you to speculate on where all of the pieces go.

Why merge?

1. Monkey see...
2. Now eligible for "Mega-Carrier" discount at Old Country Buffet
3. Voice in Tilton's head keeps whispering, "If you merge it, they will come." and "Go back to Chevron, loser!"
4. Big misunderstanding! Tilton thought "Golden Share" was like Willy Wonka's "Golden Ticket".
5. Tilton had a "vision" while driving to work last week. A sign told him to "MERGE".
6. Ha! Ha! Ha! Like airline CEO's need a logical "reason" to do anything! Ha! Ha! Ha!
7. Lee Moak commands him to do it.

A guy sits at home, mouse in hand, lists his current position as "doggy style" on a public forum. And UAL pilots are strange?

Anyway, this fuel issue is a giant sh$t sandwich and we all are going to take a bite.
