It's better than taking money out of your 401K.

Not bashing you, but you do not know what you are talking about on this one. If you take a loan against your 401, you are borrowing YOUR money and paying YOURSELF back including interest (at a fixed rate too). Rather than a card where you are paying some bank and they are subject to hike the rate. Plus it is on your credit rating as a strike against you having a large amount of debit. With the 401 loan, your credit report does not reflect the loan and therefore your score will not be negatively impacted. If you are going to borrow money or want out of your CC debit, a 401K loan is not a bad option.

Actually, borrowing from your 401(k) is generally not a good idea.

First, you pay yourself back with aftertax dollars. Then, when you retire and withdraw the money, you are taxed on it again. So you are losing the tax savings advantage on that money.

Second, if you leave the job, you must pay it all back or it is considered taxable.

But, if he is leaving his job for CAL, he would only have the option of liquidating his 401(k)--a VERY bad idea since you pay taxes plus a 10% penalty, rolling it into an IRA or moving it to CAL when eligible. If he had more than $5,000 he could leave it with his current employer.

Why don't you get over it 737 puke. Telling someone to live off a credit card for six months is stupid, even you should be able to figure that out. If someone couldn't plan and save enough money for the first six months with no insurance and first year at low pay they're probably not going to be able to pay more than the minimum payment on the credit card after living off it for six months. Its not like they're making a killing on year 2 pay. That's the problem with this country everyones carrying way to much credit card debt. If another pilot can tell another pilot that's a good option than pilots are really stupid. Maybe you should become the CFO of delta with that kind of financial knowledge, that way you could keep delta out of bankruptcy. Oh wait you were already there and they took your pension.

Oh and heres to hoping Delta goes the way of Eastern! You Delta guys sound like a great group of you guys, not!

I still contend it is better than a CC. Not saying it is perfect, but if you have have to borrow money it is the lesser of two evils.

Well, I have a 0% APR for the life of the balance transfer through Discover Card. So explain how taking money out of your 401k is better? I'm not bashing you, but I don't think you know what you're talking about...........

Little boy,

You need to get off of your dad's computer and go to bed. Living off of a credit card is an awful option. It's an option. And while we're at it little one, when you get hired at a major airline, they pay you for your work. Not much, at the moment but, it really wouldn't matter to you living in your parents basement either way. We have things called contracts which get re-worked when they expire. Once again, this is so far over your head, but suffice it to say, the current low pay will improve within the next couple of years. People are paid, so using a credit card for INSURANCE PREMIUMS ONLY, for six months is possible, again not advisable. If a person has a child, like you, they have to make sacrifices. Ask your dad about it.

Nope this is not over my head at all, it's simple, living off credit cards is stupid and guys have given better options on this thread. Don't live in a basement either and just finished building a new house and I get payed a descent wage thank you. Your daddy probably got you hired at the airline you work for though. It's to bad I probably had to fly with your sorry ass before.
