BTW Is the US the only country in the world where you can be in poverty and be obese at the same time?

This is because in the U.S. if someone doesn't have something they will take it from someone that does. It's kinda like trickle down economics, with a Detroit twist.

Seriously though, the U.S. is becoming a giant welfare state, and worse yet, we're paying for it all with monopoly money. When will people learn that you can't run a business, government, or for that matter your own personal finances on credit and expect it to end well.

LBJ and Nixon inherited a "Police action" from the gentleman you have quoted on the bottom of you page, JFK.

With respect to general US policy in Vietnam, JFK did escalate. He inherited the POS from Ike.

My comments were specifically directed toward the debate on the economy we were having. The "guns AND butter" money printing press was cranked up during LBJ and continued into Nixon.

despite warnings from Eisenhower about Laos and Vietnam, Europe and Latin America "loomed larger than Asia on his sights." In his inaugural address, Kennedy made the ambitious pledge to "pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of liberty."

Ike didn't really want to deal with Indochina. After the 1954 Geneva accords France left Indochina.

We have no idea what the world would be like if Vietnam had not taken place.

Hi!

U want to talk about the US Hostages in Iran, and then complain about Carter/the Dems???

Reagan, and Bush Sr. KEPT THE HOSTAGES in Iran until the Presidential Election was over. Iran would've released them during Carter's presidency, but Reagan/Bush figured he would pull the election out, so they took action with Iran to KEEP THEM IMPRISONED, until Reagan was in office.

NICE!

I would LOVE to be a POW and have the leaders in my country keep me imprisoned longer, just for their own political (or monetary) gain.

I think the last good president we had was Eisenhower. If he was running today, he would run as a Democrat, as their platform is much closer to his than the current Republican platform is.

I'm hoping that Obama can be close to as good as Eisenhower was. McCain won't be, but he'll be TONS better than GW Bush (duh!).

nice liberal nutcase conspiracy theory

but it did not happen...
"House Inquiry Finds No Evidence of Deal On Hostages in 1980", The New York Times, 1993-01-13.

"A bipartisan House panel has concluded that there is no merit to the persistent accusations that people associated with the 1980 Presidential campaign of Ronald Reagan struck a secret deal with Iran to delay the release of American hostages until after the election."

You have to step away from the MSNBC and Moveon.org news sites.

NYT is bad enough....

Hi!
Reagan, and Bush Sr. KEPT THE HOSTAGES in Iran until the Presidential Election was over.

Why would they do this? Were they worried about not being able to beat Carter in the election?

That was the most lopsided election ever. Mondale carried ONE state! That's only one more than I got and I wasn't even on the ballot!

My US History degree is fortunately bipartisan, so how about I fix some of the misinformation on the thread.

The first President to send troops to Vietnam was Eisenhower. Not, JFK, LBJ, Nixon.

Carter successfully negotiated the release of the Iranian hostages, but the release was not until after Regan took office, and in true politician fashion, he took credit for it.

Lets dig deep then, In September 1950, US President Harry Truman sent the Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) to Vietnam to assist the French in the First Indochina war. The President claimed they were not sent as combat troops, but to supervise the use of $10 million worth of US military equipment to support the French in their effort to fight the Viet Minh forces.

Keep digging

On 1955-02-12 at a conference in Washington, D.C., between officials of the U.S. State Department and the French Minister of Overseas Affairs, it was agreed that all U.S. aid would be funneled directly to South Vietnam and that all major military responsibilities would be transferred from the French to the MAAG under the command of Lieutenant General John O'Daniel. A problem arose however, because the French Expeditionary Force had to be departed from South Vietnam in April of 1956 as directed by the Accords. To fill the void of lost French soldiers, the MAAG mission was increased to 740 men by the end of June.

Truman sent in accountants. Eisenhower sent in soldiers.

You have no idea what Reagan did to release those guys. But I would bet it went like this "Hi, this is Ron in 50 days I will be Commander in Chief of the US Military. If the hostages are not released within 24 hours of me being the boss in the US, your country will cease to exist as a civilized country with infrastructure, have a nice day” This will never be public because it might hurt someone feelings. Will Obama bring us the same sense of security?

I think it was the T-shirt I wore in 1980 that I got at the Marine Shop in Quantico ...

made in USA
tested in Japan
Screw with us and
we'll drop it on Iran
with a picture of a big mushroom cloud.

But President Obama can ask Amadinajad when he talks to him without precondidtion ... he was one of the terrorist hostage takers in 1979.

Remember when I told you that you're going to be a lot less liberal after you upgrade to captain and realize how much more taxes you pay...looks like what I said is coming true

I'm one of the most hated things in this country, a moderate. <gasp, I try to see both views and make up my own mind> I have always hated taxes, probably because I am from Tennessee where they have at least one thing right. NO STATE INCOME TAX. You only pay taxes, when, and if, you decide to spend your money. Figures, when I finally start making a dollar the rest of America goes broke, and the cost of everything sky rockets.

I think that living in a state ran by a Canadian and in a suburb of a city ran by a murderer is wearing off on me. It doesn't take much to figure out why Michigan is in such a slump, the people running the show up here are morons. The news up here is far more entertaining than any TV show on. I record it on the DVR now so when I need a good laugh I can have it instantly.

Hi!

I actually went from Capt to FO, and had the worst tax year of my life, due to the AMT.

The AMT was designed so EVERYONE would pay taxes (there were about 80 rich people in the 1960s that didn't pay taxes, which outraged the public and led to the AMT).

So, now that we have the present day AMT, there are STILL people who make millions and pay no taxes, and the middle/upper-middle classes get HAMMERED by the AMT. If you make over $500K it doesn't affect you at all.

PS-I'm looking forward to going back to Capt this year, and my tax rate will go down.

PPS-Oh, also Buffett says the current tax code is horrible. The wealthiest Americans are paying no where near their share, and the middle class is getting raped.
