Can someone tell me how AA calculates service charges for traveling on a buddy pass (code D3 - guest)? Is there a formula or is it based on a rate per mile?

Thanks ahead of time.

Yup, it's based on some kind of mileage.

Believe it or not, sometimes you can actually find a positive-space fare that is pretty close to the D3 cost, especially to Europe. Not surprising considering fares these days.
