Washington (CNN) -- The nation's 44,000 airport screeners would lose the title "officer," their metal badges and maybe even the stripes down their pant legs under a bill sponsored by a Transportation Security Administration critic.
Called the "STRIP Act," for "Stop TSA's Reach In Policy Act," the bill was introduced by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee, on Thursday in response to a series of alleged strip searches by TSA officers.
The TSA denies that strip searches were conducted.
"Congress has sat idly by as the TSA strip-searches 85-year-old grandmothers in New York, pats down 3-year-olds in Chattanooga, and checks colostomy bags for explosives in Orlando. Enough is enough!," Blackburn said in a statement. "The least we can do is end this impersonation, which is an insult to real cops."
The bill, which has 25 co-sponsors, would prohibit airport screeners from using the title "officer" and would ban them from wearing a metal badge resembling a police badge or a uniform resembling that of a federal law enforcement officer unless they receive law enforcement training.
When the TSA was formed after the 2001 terrorist attacks, screeners wore white shirts with embroidered patches. But in 2005, the TSA reclassified screeners as "transportation security officers," and in 2007 introduced new uniforms in an effort to professionalize the workforce and boost morale. In 2008, metal badges were added to the uniform.
At the time, the association representing federal law enforcement officers opposed the badges, saying that they would mislead the public into believing the screeners had traditional police powers. Transportation security officers are unarmed, do not have arrest powers and cannot use force, the association said.
But the association on Friday opposed the changes.
"I think it is wrong to strip away the title. It's not the screener's fault," said Jon Adler, president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association. "I think the bill in Congress should focus not so much on taking away a title but in assuring that the training and experience support the title. The answer is to build upon it; don't strip it away."
The union representing screeners called the bill an insult.
"Every single member of Congress should be supporting federal employees, not trying to demean them," said John Gage, president of the American Federation of Government Employees.
"Reps. Blackburn, (Florida Rep. John) Mica and their other cohorts in the House need to stop bullying the TSA workforce, and maybe just worry about doing their own jobs," Gage said.
"Instead of actually helping to fight terrorism," he said, "they are inspiring the type of unnecessary and disrespectful behavior by a few members of the public with an agenda that in fact diverts attention from securing American skies."

They should just disband the TSA all together....It is a government facade program that was created to comfort and convince the public into thinking the 9-11 security "PROBLEM" had been fixed by replacing all the "substandard" private screeners.

What the government failed to tell the public is that the private screeners did NOTHING wrong. At that time, box cutters were legal and acceptable in your carry-on baggage so the problem was in prohibited item aboard aircraft mandates which were/are controlled by the FEDS.

The TSA is just expensive security theater to make the public think the Feds are doing something.

So you approve of spending Billions of dollars on an impotent security system run by incompetants.

I am no fan of TSA by no means. I have been in the business for over 22 years and think when TSA took over it was a joke. they have evolved into a huge workforce costing us taxpayers billions of dollars. And in over the time of their existence they have not stopped any terrorists. Just harassed allot of folks When I look at the local individuals that work for TSA at my local airport, I think to myself why did TSA hire these individuals. There are some morbidly obese folks ( that is by the us definition) others that seem professional , others that dont have a clue that they are in an airport. Their rudeness is overwhelming, they never smile just should commands. I have traveled thru Europe many times and at least over there they are professional and polite. What my gripe is now is after you have cleared the security checkpoint they are now doing inspections at the gate. Sometimes it is just checking for liquids, id's and my favorite a pat down at the gate. It takes 5 TSA agents to do this task. One supervisor to hold the clipboard and four other TSA agents to harass the passengers who are boarding. My personal favorite is when a flight is delayed and you really need a quick boarding to get the flight out , TSA shows up to your gate " OH we need to do additional screening today"

Funny, day before yesterday we are in ATL, I come back up the jetbridge to see if there's a business class seat we can upgrade some military guys into, and sure enough, 4 TSA people just leaning up against some chairs. I look at them and say, "No, no, guys... it's OK... I GOT this." and smiled really big. Gate agents and passengers all start laughing... TSA looks not so amused, but it was still funny. :)

On a side note, Marsha Blackburn is in my district. I voted for her. Her local policies are very annoying (we tried to approve buying wine in the grocery stores - we can currently buy beer but to buy wine we have to go to a liquor store - and she voted against it, which doesn't do anything but add a stop in my day at the liquor store, I'm still going to buy it, genius). But on the national level, overall, she does pretty well.

By the way, your quote on her supporting higher gas prices, was said in passing in a speech that overall was preaching less dependance on foreign oil, ANWR efforts, shifting more towards renewable energy sources, and overall saying that Obama needed to develop a REAL energy plan, rather than the crap he supports that affects no real change.

Just FYI.
