If your sole purpose is to get the ATP and Rating and don't have plans on flying the Citation afterward, your best bet and least expensive would probably be to do the training and checkride in the airplane. There are a few companies around (at least there used to be) that will do it and it should be less that doing an initial at school. This would include ground school and a few hrs in the airplane for training.

Be careful with the cheep "quicky" citation type "in the airplane" schools. I was giving a 135 check ride to a pilot who went to Texas to get a quick type in a citation to get a job with a company. He was typed just two weeks before we started the check ride. We had to stop because the school never taught him how to start the engines. It seemed the insrtuctor started the engines each time because they did not trust the students to do so. No matter how many times the student read the start check list he could not figure out how to start the engines. I asked him how he planned to conduct a charter flight if he did not know how to start the engines. It was a short, incomplete 135 ride. He left and I never saw him again.

I agree with you completely. That's why I said if he doesn't have any plans to fly the plane. He just wants an interesting way to get the ATP. If you are going to fly the plane, go to shcool.

Uh yeah... no plans to work as a pilot. They pay sucks. No retirement. been there and done that already.

I just figured if I was going to go get an ATP for fun I might as well go get typed for fun. It sounds like it costs way more than doing the checkride in a seminole or something like that so I'll likely just pass and use the $$ for a glider rating instead :)

If you want a rating for fun get a seaplane or glider rating. Get some aerobatic or tail wheel time. Go for a flying vacation. Other than any training can make you a better pilot, The ATP isn't worth much unless you plan to do 135 or 121.

just MHO

A lot of corp operators require the ATP even though it is not 121 or 135

You are correct about insurance and some companies require an ATP to get hired. But I was refering to his comment "no plans to work as a pilot". For him an ATP isn't worth much unless you wish to talk about working for a higher rating can make you a better pilot with the extra training and practice. Most any training is worthwhile.

If he is looking for a "fun" rating, I suggest a sea plane, glider rating, aerobatic or tail wheel time.

If he has the money and desire, I'd do all of the above......
