If you want a rating for fun get a seaplane or glider rating. Get some aerobatic or tail wheel time. Go for a flying vacation. Other than any training can make you a better pilot, The ATP isn't worth much unless you plan to do 135 or 121.

just MHO

A lot of corp operators require the ATP even though it is not 121 or 135

Uh yeah... no plans to work as a pilot. They pay sucks. No retirement. been there and done that already.

I just figured if I was going to go get an ATP for fun I might as well go get typed for fun. It sounds like it costs way more than doing the checkride in a seminole or something like that so I'll likely just pass and use the $$ for a glider rating instead :)

You are correct about insurance and some companies require an ATP to get hired. But I was refering to his comment "no plans to work as a pilot". For him an ATP isn't worth much unless you wish to talk about working for a higher rating can make you a better pilot with the extra training and practice. Most any training is worthwhile.

If he is looking for a "fun" rating, I suggest a sea plane, glider rating, aerobatic or tail wheel time.

If he has the money and desire, I'd do all of the above......
