I think the Air Forcle should pull out some of the old KC-135's with the water injection...that would make them think twice!

"110 water". 10 to 25 seconds later, the relative silence was deafening! (Apologies for the thread drift - just couldn't he'p myself...)

That, plus the decrease in thrust if all four cut out at the same time would actually put a little stress on the old shoulder straps. Such fun!

They (DHL) should have settled up in SAC or Mather.

MHR doesn't even have a full (1800 RVR) Cat I approach though they'd probably have room for the facility.

By SAC do you mean SMF or somewhere else? The sort facility at RIV is a very large truck sort as well as the air sort. I'm not sure that SMF would have had the room.

I also think that they wanted it closer to (i.e. in) the LA Basin for truck access to LAX. Just guessing on that, though, as they load a lot of cans into trucks that are labeled for international belly freight out of LAX.

You're right on both counts LJ, I meant to type SMF. And after I posted, I did recall the selection of RIV was, in part, a logistical compromise for the reason you stated and also I thought to service points south of LA better. Still, the NIMBY's are being a$$holes.

I have had conversations with people that deal with the complaints that come in from the nimbys. Funny thing about all this is that 95% of the complaints come from just a few people, calling almost every night. One lady wants us to turn off our radar so we don't give her tumors...I have also heard some other doozies.

RIV does seem like a little bit of a mistake. I think there were other options that might have been better.

One of the biggest problems there is the inability to taxi with RVR below 1200, even though we are allowed a 600 RVR takeoff, something to do with the military requirement?

Did she use her circa-1995 analog cell phone to lodge the complaint?

Regarding facilities, an airport (MHR for instance) can become whatever the primary user wants it to be. If it can be certified for lower vis minimums, it will be, if that user ponies up whatever capital is needed to make it what they want.
