I did not say do nothing! I said why don't you picket your own management for doing nothing. Please explain to me what Dasburg is doing to help fight for your job. You know, I am not sure what will happen when DHL is gone, but I am not going to whine about other companies only doing what is best for thier employees. It is over! Even if we win the antitrust suit, what will be left? 1% of the market. Channel your energies into persuading your boss to find alternatives to keep his employees working...

Hey dx, that's an awesome idea! Why, I'll just head right on down to MIA and knock on the Daz's door and say "hey, let's use those 8's on ACMI! It doesn't matter that DHL has that pesky agreement with you that states "all your jets are belong to us!" where they can sue Astar six ways to Sunday if we dare to use them for something other than flying DHL material. ! Heck no! Let's just do it!" Right.

Everything I've read about this deal so far indicates that DHL is planning, at least for the time being, to maintain their own billing and tracking systems. The only part that's being "outsourced" is the travel between cities. How does "the color of the plane" upon which the cargo travels control pricing?

Think about what you just asked. You're a bright guy, I know you can figure this out on your own.

I'm not sure I'd call filing this grievance and what would be the multimillion dollar lawsuit "whining"...but to each his own.

I'm sorry DX, what was it again you said you and 1224 were doing again to save your jobs?

Come on Dan, is UPS going to hire 6k-7k somebodies to do the job? It is a net loss no matter how you cut it.
The 6-7000 jobs includes secondary and tertiary jobs within the region. When DHL expanded the CVG hub, some "economist" said that every dollar coming into the community was spent 7 times. The actual number of Astar/ABX/DHL jobs lost will be a couple thousand. (ABX will probably survive, although as a smaller company)

UPS WILL have to hire additional people to handle DHL freight. Unfortunately, they won't need to hire 1100 pilots, but they WILL add and promote pilots, as will some of their feeders. Caravan runs may become ATR runs, and ATR runs may go in-house to UPS, all of which creates new opportunites for pilots. Sorting at both companies is still done largely by hand, one piece at a time. If the number of pieces goes up by, say, 7%, the number of people required to sort them (in the same amount of time) also goes up by 7%. They're going to need bodies. I don't know why they wouldn't consider hiring people who have been doing the same job at DHL. The same applies to aircraft mechs, load planners, ops people, security guards, whatever.

The blow to the Wilmington economy will be severe, and to many individual pilots, devastating. Yes, there will be a net loss of jobs, because UPS is a bigger, more efficient company, flying bigger, more efficient planes. But there will be just as many packages being flown, sorted, and flown again each night as there were before this "merger." Somebody's going to make money handling that additional volume and supplying the infrastructure it requires.

This might be a real good time to open a U-Haul franchise in Clinton County.

Dan, Actually the 6-7k jobs lost is at the airport. The trickle down effect could be three to four times that.

We have picketed our management right in Plantation, right on DHL's front door step, as they sit on our board, they are our management. You guys have.....................

If you're willing to sit around and let the others do the heavy lifting, that's fine.

I’m guessing the fav subject around the Astar cafeteria still hasn’t changed…. dissing ABX pilots.

I’ll just point out that of all the tactics employed to try to change DHL’s plans, it’s the political arena that’s gained the most traction and has the best potential. It’s been ABX pilots, not Astar pilots, that led the way.

That’s Ok. You guys just keep doing what you’ve always done…. make noise. We’ll just keep doing what we’ve always done… get results.

I'm sorry peng. You wanna elaborate on that? How exactly you've "led the way"? How exactly you "get results"? Political arena or otherwise. Please enlighten us.

Well let’s see.

McCain is coming to ILN. He’s feels forced to address the issue. Obama is sure to follow. If we can get one of these guys to commit to using Oval Office influence once they’re in the White House, anythings possible.

Think a presidential candidate backing you won’t make much difference?
Sen Brown thinks differently…
"Deutsche Post is going to want a lot of things from the U.S. government in the years ahead," Brown says. "And I think that President Obama at my urging is going to want to do a little less for them if they do this to 8,000 American workers."

Oh yeah, there’s the antitrust thingSen Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Herb Kohl, D-Wis, called for federal review of a proposed arrangement between United Parcel Service and DHL Express US, the second and third largest overnight package delivery services in the United States.”

Just who do you think has been in all the endless meetings bringing their staffers up to speed on this issue? ALPA?

I will say that I was at work last night when 1224 brought Sherrod Browns staffer through our office. I believe it was to report back to Brown with a better idea of the operations and jobs that are going to be lost.

Damn, I hadn't had this good of a laugh in a long time!

Thanks Penguin! You boys keep "leading the way!" LOL!!

Daz will offer you guys money and future jobs as cabana boys and you will fold on this lawsuit too.
"got scope?"

Yea you're sooooo right Penguin, nobody else has been involved, only the Superior Leadership and intellect of the 1224 has made any of this happen...............

Keep slurping the Kool-Aid buddy........

I'll be sure and pass along your immense appreciation to Joe Teuchert, AStar pilot and head of the Save our Jobs in ILN group. He's the one coordinating the McCain and Obama visit. Did you and Al Gore invent the internet too? Soo unbelievable...but Peng....what are YOU...Peng, doin to save your job?

R & W and AV8OR, he is actually a lot more correct than you want to believe on this one. I'm not gonna bash your side or say our side has done more. I will leave that worthless argument to others. Fact is though, 1224 has had a number of guys that have been working their butts off in the political arena and have been instrumental in the effect that has taken place so far. That is not to say that Astar hasn't as well. Thing you have to remember is, we can't see the meetings, phone calls, or letters that your guys are writting anymore than you apparently see ours. Thats fine as long as the the people that can help, see them. I know you guys want to save your careers and are working hard to do so. But, you can rest assured that our side of the fense is working just as hard. We may be taking a different approach and we may feel that the arena we have chosen is the more effective one, even if it doesn't put us on Utube. Either way, as long as the deal fails to go through, thats what 1224 and ALPA are fighting for, right? Why don't we save the ABX vs Astar fight untill we collectively win this battle and the have to figure out who gets to fly those last two remaining packages that haven't been lost due to the announcement.

There is certainly more meat on the political winds that apply to Wilmington than to the air force. If you read the articles and hear all this political wind, that is where the emphasis has been and as far as many are concerned the most damaging PR for DHL. Another air carrier losing jobs, not anywhere near as compelling. Sorry.
In the 1980's I opened the Flying Tiger hub at LCK and we hired all kinds of people for the hub operation from central Ohio plus many Tigers employees moved in from Chicago, Anchorage, and other Tiger hubs. A year later, here is Fedex and the end of that.
Is this much different?

Agree 100% MXer. I believe what started this whole thing was one of your guys on here criticizing our efforts, characterizing them as simply "whining", giving us advice on what we SHOULD be doing instead, and then another guy insinuating that while we "whine", 1224 "delivers". I think that's when it went south for me. But I'm willing to put it behind me. Consider it done. And thanks for your post.

Agreed.

It's completely differrent. FEDEX took employees with them. UPS will not take a soul!

No its not much different. These guys are beating a dead horse. If all they want to do is ruin DHL, then go right ahead. But the ship has sailed as far as DHL ever becoming a major player in the US. Answer me this guys. Lets just say that because of immense pressure DHL decides they made the wrong decision. They grudgingly decide to continue to use ABX/ASTAR AS thier carrier, and they use the ILN hub to sort freight. Currently there market share is south of 4%. They continue to lose money buy the bucketfull. What do you really think is going to happen. Show me your plan here. Are you going to take pay cuts and fly more so that they can offer lower prices and more services(because that is the only way they are going to ever get customers back). What is your plan? You still have never answered my question about Dasburg, what is he doing to stop this? What exactly are you trying to accomplish? It sucks, that you, me and about 8000 other people are going to be out of jobs if DHL leaves. If you want to save them find alternatives to keep people employed, don't beat the dead horse.....
I will be the first to say I do not know what the alternative is. We have to start looking elsewhere, and not live in denial that everything is going to be OK.

abxdx, you guys do have some options after DHL. We don't. It's that simple. So now, we go to war. We'll know what happens when the smoke clears. If that isn't good enough for you, then sorry.

You should be asking yourself why you do not have options. And when you get the answer, go picket that person. Why can't you work at having options?

I'm wondering why you can't MYOB? We've weighed all our options, and chosen our course. You are, in your own words, "beating a dead horse".

Chimchim, where do you get the idea that we're in denial? Our owners(Daz and DHL) have told us what the options are if this deal goes through---nothing, nada, zip. CAN YOU UNDERSTAND THIS?

Why do you give a rat's a$$ what we are doing? You have made it crystal clear what you think of the Astar pilot group. Can't fly in wx, prima donas, blah, blah, blah! You, and others have being telling us since 2003.

Talk about beating a dead horse! STFU!

So why are you picketing UPS then. They are not the reason you have no options. The DAZ is.....
Instead of spending all your time trying to stop the inevitable, why don't you go to DAZ with some ideas to keep you employed.

We currently have 7 airplanes flying out of MIA. 1 out of LAX with another on the way on a temp basis, and 1 flying for ANA, it will be back to 2 in the fall. The freight is out there. Why don't you get Daz to get off his butt and get some of it. I know the DC8 is not the ideal aircraft going into the future, but you can slowly change over to something more fuel efficient.
Why are you guys hounding DOD to get more business?

This is a public forum, and I can say whatever I want. My original post was just agreeing with what publishers and BBB were saying about you guys going after the wrong guys. If you cannot handle the truth that your management made millions and in the proccess hosed you that is your problem. I am simply trying to convey that if you want to maintain your current lifestyle for the long term, I would find alternatives for your company. If you can find ways to make money I am sure DAZ will listen. It is pretty obvious he likes the stuff..

Sure you can say what you want. The problem is, you don't listen to what we're saying the situation is at Astar. I'm done chatting with you dx. It's like talking to a wall.
