Im not sure of the percentage. but in regards to a previous post about quotas... Quotas are illegal per Supreme Court. And I believe that the playing field should be level for everyone in this industry when it comes to applying for jobs. No man or woman should get the job over another because he or she is a minority or a female.

Fair enough. Having said that, when you fill out an application do you check "African American" or "Prefer Not To Say" when you get to the block asking about your race?

In the words of the late James Brown..."Say it loud! Im black and Im proud!!!!" :p

Well, if you were so committed to the so-called moral high ground of, "each on his own merit" that you have been preaching here, then you wouldn't fall back on the race box when it comes to application time. My best friend waited an extra year to get into med school because he refused to check the "African American" box. Foolish? Perhaps. But at least he sleeps well at night knowing he did the right thing.

I have no problem checking the box. I'm not ashamed of who i am. Plus that box is used only for company demographics. not quotas!

Congratulations. You have just taken the award for the most ridiculous statement ever posted on FI.

For the record, I'm not saying you should be ashamed of who you are. In fact, I think you should be proud of your ancestry, regardless of what it is. However, I don't think you should be so quick to "check the box" when you know darn well that it will help you get into the short stack at your company of choice. If you choose to exploit that particular trump card, then so be it. Society at large has given you that right. However, don't be so quick to check the "I'm an African-American" box and then stand on your own merit when you're offered a job with far less qualifications than your more ethnically challenged brethren.

I'm French-Cajun myself. My ancestors were force-marched from Canada to Louisiana against their will. Hundreds died, and the ones that survived found themselves relocated from upper-middle class to house servants and river men. I'm descended from a long line of under-educated fishermen and riverboat drivers. I'm also the second male in my family to be given the opportunity to attend college. Funny, I didn't see the "Acadian" box on the application. All I saw was, "Caucasian".

My great-grandfather (a white man, mind you) died a virtual slave to the man who owned the land he lived on. I remember him. I remember his stories. I've heard first hand the what my ancestors went through. I wonder, can you say the same?? Or do you just fall back on what mass media tells you that you are entitled to??

If you choose to take advantage of the wrong-doings that your forbears endured (which you obviously will, given your previous few posts), you should, at the very least, be grateful for the trump card that your long dead ancestors and Lyndon Johnson have handed you.

Instead, you shrug it off saying, "I'm black and I'm proud, and I will earn my position on my own merit." You, sir, are either blind to the world around you or you are the worst kind of hypocrite. Which is it?

Bulls*&^!!!

Okay PLC_128; looking at your profile and the airplane you have flown let me guess...
I smell Gulfstream, Pinnacle and Airtran.
Now, you bought your way in, fine I don't blame you.
Then, Pinnacle: congratulation..oh!!! i forgot part of the bridge program.
Now, Airtran: you are maybe second year FO making money, could be a captain in 4-6 years.
But wait, I m pissed of because minorities are stealing my opportunity at Delta. I don't think leaving Airtran for Delta is a smart move but hey, your choices speak for themselfs.
In another words, PCL get a life.
I am as qualify as you are, I paid my dues( sorry couldn't pay my way in) and still can't get a call.
It's about who you know, or you can join Obap.

doudou, I'm not trying to go to Delta. Perfectly happy at AirTran. But even though this doesn't affect me, it still bugs me because I know that a lot of my buddies that are still at the regionals will lose opportunities because they can't check the right box on the application to fill a certain quota. Your racial background should have absolutely zero impact on whether you get a job or not. Affirmative action is offensive and discriminatory. And worst of all, it's insulting to the very people that it aims to help because it implies that they can't get the job based on their own qualifications. It's time to put affirmative action out to pasture.

Buddies that you stepped on by paying for your first airline job?

Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones
