Interns

Hey guys, I'm not sure if the argument is about whether interns are competent, or why they should get special treatment. I think if we (ASA) don't continue to hire interns, word will get out, and only the lazy idiots will apply and get hired to the internships. I for one like to have a competent intern in the office to get me revisions or paperwork that I am in need of. The chief pilots are not always there, and it is nice to have up to date data on the airplanes. You are not going to change the current practice, and besides I have trained with some interns, they have to pass the same checkride and oral as me. Some are a little cocky, but most realize the opportunity they have, and do well. I was never an intern, got furloughed after 9-11, but I still won't bash someone because they might seem to have a faster track than me. Now, pay for training, that is another thing.

ifly4food,

Check your info again. If you are talking about ASA there are a LOT of interns that got hired with WAY less than 1200TT. I'm one of them.

There Here!

Yes, we hire interns with low time. We hire them because of contracts with the schools that they come from. DCI training academy being one of them. Those schools can't advertise "X % of our graduates become new hires at DCI" if we dont hire any. We maintain contracts with those schools for times of pilot shortages. Not really an issue today. We did have a lot of trouble with the 300 hour wonders and had a lot of Capt complaints about situational awareness issues (which is understandable given their experience levels) a couple of years ago. We did slow down the number of Interns hired due to those complaints, but I am not sure of our current policy. I know that recruiting wants the most experience it can get. :p

Tim, I think you have interns confused with the ab-initio programs like DCI academy and such.

Oops, your right!

Ya, I lumped all of those guys into one big ball. Sorry. Two different programs. The 300 hour wonders could have been from either program. Thanks for setting me straight. Tim.

Yea, cause those 12,000 hour "wonder captains" that sleep in cruise have much better situational awarness!!!! There are quite a few people (now captains) who were hired with low time "pre-program" days.:D

My school doesnt have a contract with any of the schools that people get offered internships for. I know that for a fact. It is all based on an individual interveiwing. There isnt a garuntee of a job even with 1200 hours. Most offer an interveiw, some dont even do that.

They need to put one of those interns in the "D-Lounge." I'm tired of having to get up from my faux-leather recliner, to flip back and forth through the Arrivals and Departures screens.

I know WMU just finished using up the money Delta gave them for the Diversity in Aviation scholarship. Out of the last class that went through WMU, some had interviews at Comair and some got interviews at ASA. I know 1 got a Comair job and 2 got offers from ASA.
These pilots are low time, but they got an oppertunity, ran with it, I hope they make the best of it and don't look back.

As far as ASA interns...I hope people don't give them too much $hit for being considered at lower than "off the street" mins. I know what sucky jobs and low pay they got for their effort as interns. Again, they got an oppertunity and I hope they make the best of it when it comes time for their interview and get the job without too much $hit being thrown their way.

The fact is that the interns are the smarter ones. They realize how valuable connections are and get to work face to face with many top dog people. Many of them get hired in return and receive a break to the next guy off the street. Seniority is everything in this game, and if they are willing to do an internship, more power to them. Most of the ones I know are class A people, of course you'll get your bad apples once in a while. But as I said, they know what they're doing. Would you want to try and survive any kind of flying job for years until you get your hours together or do a paid internship and with high probability get an interview and job? No brainer really!
