The cost of retaining a pilot on reserve instead of furloughing a pilot is not measured in the price of gas. That is not a factor.
I really think you missed Over's point: the game is different now than post 9/11. If it makes you feel better that ASA has never furloughed, or that SKYW didn't furlough, great.
Yes, we all know that ASA doesn't pay for the gas. We also know that the ATR is the most fuel efficient airplane at ASA, but that doesn't seem to matter to the present or the future, either.
Current conditions seem to indicate that furloughing is serious possibility at ASA, and no amount of history can change the present.
