I'm not necessarily disagreeing with what is being said here about no recalls until next spring, I think that is a definite possibility and I don't want to give false hope, but I wouldn't rule out some fall recalls, regardless of what is being spread at the FO summits. Why? I spoke with someone in flt ops a few weeks ago, while they stopped short of saying there would be recalls in the fall, they did point to three things that might help get pilots back:
1) There were already about 6 pilots who had turned in their retirement paperwork for the summer. Granted, I think they can change their minds right up until the day they walk.
2) The projected block hours for the fall don't drop off like they have in previous years for the same time period. I hear they are pretty close to summer block hours. Couple this with #3.
3) Remember all those vacations and recurrents they pushed out of the summer to staff the airline? Well they didn't just get moved up. Some got pushed into the fall. Add that to the requirement of SEA ETOPS training.
All in all, there are some improving trends. A few little less publicized tidbits. We are now keeping one more -400 through the end of the year (113 to 114 airplanes in the latest investor update) and we are adding back some capacity. I just saw the are adding another daily SEA-LAX roundtrip in the fall. The fall schedule is not yet finalized either so we may see more flying.
I think the final straw will be to see how well their staffing plan for summer unfolds. If there is a total meltdown, I personally think your could see a knee-jerk reaction to bring people back in the fall.
Just my $.02, but what do I know, I am just a juvenile delinquent who is no longer in uniform!
