Are women pilots 8 times safer than men?

One of the columnists on AVweb has repeatedly made this claim, that women pilots are statistically 8 times less likely to have an accident as men.

The claim is down toward the end in the paragraph entitiled Men VS. Women.

I've been reading Avweb for quite a few years and this claim is repeated frequently by Mr Durden. When questioned, he claims "many" studies have shown that men are eight times more likely than women to have an aircraft accident, but is unable (or unwilling) to be more specific.

So, has anyone else heard this? Anyone know of any studies which show this? Any which disprove it? Well kept secret or femi-nazi lie?

Well if he is generalizing the pilot group and looking at accidents overall compared to gender, then women are probably more safer, as there are probably 100 male pilots to every 1 female pilot. So the odds of an accident involving a male are probably 100 times more likely, Since there are many more male pilots to female pilots.

I have worked with probably 100 different pilots and only 2 were females. 1 of the females had an "incident" and probably 5 males had an "incident". So in my corner of the world the statistics would be 50% for women and 5% for males.

Not to suggest that women are *less* safe, but 8 times *more* safe seems a bit unlikely to me

I think anyone can skew statistics to prove any point they want. I just spent a few minutes trying to find statistics on this, and I can't find anything legitimate.

If you take a 1500 hour male and a 1500 hour female pilot, same age....the female pilot is definitely at least 8 times less likely to be involved in an incident/accident. The male pilot is out flying single pilot freight, the female pilot is sitting in the right seat at a Major with 10,000 hour Captains...isn't that safer?

Ok, I have been flying for over a year now. If you didn't feel confortable flying with someone...don't you have the comfort in yourself to know what is right, and wrong?
Just saying, if they're about to do something wrong, or about to put you in jeopordy...don't you have the self confidence in yourself to take control of the situation?

Just a question. I have only flown with one person, and one person only that I would never fly with again. That was only because SHE would never shut the he!! up. I have flown with several females that I would, and will fly with again. But this broad would bite through the duct tape if she was taped shut.

Nah, I understand that you guys were horsing with each other. I was just asking other people in general, why they say " they wouldn't fly with another" pilot in general. Whether it be male or female. I hear some guys say "No, way! they have no clue as to what they're doing!"......I'm just asking those people if they have any confidence in themselves to take over in that type of situation?

I don't think females are safer or less or more of pilot than everyone else...I think there is an environment issue. Untill there is an equalization, there always will be an environment issue.

I'm not going to comment on the safety (or lack thereof) of female pilots. But I will say this: I have sworn off dating female pilots--my worlds would collide. Gotta keep the woman stuff separate from the airplane stuff.

For what it is worth, some of the best flight instructors I know are female.
