I would like to hear checklists for preparing for an approach that you guys have. They seem to be very controversial at my school. The DE at my school demands that everyone learn HIS checklist. I'll share the one I use and the one my school uses I'd also like to hear what FlightSafety and Simcom teaches. Thanks!

The one I use: MARTHAL

M-Missed approach (Brief the missed)
A-ATIS, AWOS (get weather, set altimeter, set DG)
R-Radios (Left to right across audio panel)
T-Time (Is there a time for the missed? If so, set it in timer)
H-Heading (What is final on-course heading)
A-Altitude (What is the MDA, DH? Review other published alt's)
L-Landing Checklist (GUMPS or Whatever)

NOTE: The Radio portion is from left to right, check marker beacons, set com1 (stby and active), set com2, tune+ident+set obs, set com2, Ident DME, turn on marker beacons, set ADF is needed. This way you don;t miss a thing.

Here is the schools' checklist (which I don't like) : LOVAR DG MAN

L-Localizer (tune, ident)
O-Outer Marker (test and set marker beacons)
V-VOR (tune and ident, set obs)
A-ATIS, AWOS
R-Radios (set com1 and com2)

D-DME (set and ident)
G-GPS (set up GPS)

M-Missed (brief missed
A-Altitude (MDA, DH)
N-Name of outer marker

Like I said, I would like to see anyother acyronms that you may have! Thanks!

Blue Skies:(

Checklist?? Whats that?? Oh you mean the thing you use to scrape the frost off the windscreen while leaning out the crew hatch.

No No Fr8Dog, you're thinking of a credit card :)

I use:

WASP ICE ATM

W- weather(atis,awos,etc)
A- altitudes (initial, MSA)
S- stack (align dg, mkr. beacons, comms, navs, adf, gps, etc)
P- pre-landing checklist

I- identify (navaids)
C- course (set inbound course)
E- entry (vectored?, procedure turn?, arc?)

A- altitudes (MDA,DH,stepdowns)
T- time (set timimg for MAP)
M- missed approach (review and be ready for it)

This one does not mean that Mat and Sam are Gay............

U-Update....Read Effective Date on Jepp
R-Runway...Runway in use and length
A-ATIS..Review ATIS Info

F-Frequency..Set ILS/VOR/NDB Freq
A-Approach Course..Dial Approach Course in CDI
G-G.S. Intercept/FAF..Glide Slope Intercept and MKR X-ing Alt
M-MDA/DH..Review DH or MDA
A-Apt Elevation..Review APT Elevation
T-TDZE..Review Touchdown Zone Elevation

S-Speeds..Approach Speeds
A-A/C Configuration..Review A/C Configuration Window
M-Miss Approach..Review Missed Approach Procedure

The above should be reviewed with a lisp. Good Luck Boys

Approach checklist

MARTHAN.

M = Missed

A = Approach

R = Radios

T = Times

H = Headings

A = Altitudes

N = Notes

There's another one called WRIMTIM, but I forgot the words.

I was brought up on the WIRE method, too.

Someone tried to teach me BLACK BOX MARTHA once, but it scared me just thinking about her. (NO, not Martha King, either - that sexy little thing she is.)

Why not just teach your students to think ahead, get the Wx and Notams update a good 20 mins out and then use the approach plates to set up. Pull out the approach you belive you'll be using and, starting with the date on top, work your way down to the missed and the notes.
Also, cover the airport diagram and plans after landing.

Keep it Simple, like the man said.

I like WIRE too, anything more that five letters is too confusing to be done without a checklist.

AAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG! DAMMIT Class G!

::gouges eyes out with an icepick::

And just to be on topic, I agree about starting early and working your way down the plate. I've never learned any elaborate memory tools.

Ouch

Goodness! Did you see the knuts on that squirrel? Poor little fella has probably got back problems from those things. He should look into getting a knut reduction or something.

Great picture - thanks for the laugh!

As far as check lists go - I use which ever one the company has laminated and place in the cockpit for me.

This one's simple and has worked for me:

A - Atis

R - Review Plate

R - Radios set up

I - Instruments set up

V - Verify Missed Approach

A - Altimeter set and verified

L - Landing Checklist (BCGUMPSL)
