Good lord people! I think I'd drive the **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** thing into the ground just trying to remember what each letter stands for instead of just flying the airplane. With the Jepp plates, make sure you've got the right airport, approach, and update, then work from left to right across the strips, then top to bottom. They design the plates this way for a reason. Its not just a bunch of info randomly thrown together. Quit sweating the small stuff and just fly the plane! :p

W - eather

R - adios (Nav & Comm)

A - ltitudes

T - iming

H - eadings

M - issed

A - pproach

R - emarks

I like the WIRE one but add a little MATH to it:

W - Weather - altimeter setting, winds, ceiling, visibility
I - Instruments - heading indicator, other navigation instruments, engine instruments
R - Radios - communications, navigation
E - Environment - check approach environment

M - Missed approach procedures
A - Altitudes - including minimums and step-downs
T - Time - set stopwatch
H - Headings - inbound and missed approach

WRATHMMIB--works everytime

20-30 miles out
Weather (Asos, Altimeter-Winds)
Radios
Altitudes
Times
Headings (including VOR 1 dial even on ILS)
Missed Approach
Marker Beacon
Identify
Brief (if your using Jepp strip)

Then between IAF and outer marker GUMPSSS ---Gas, undercarriage, mixture, power, servo switches, seatbelts

and on short final if complex:
Puff - Prop Forward, Undercarriage, Flaps to Full

:)

Holy smokes. If I had to try to remember all those d@mn acronyms, I would forget something impotant for sure.

deftone, you got me in stitches...

You don't know how much this discussion sounds like the CFI meeting we had today. And me the only one saying "I aint gonna be teachin nobody no acronyms..."

SLT, I love that. That ranks up there with my TLAR profile for instrument approaches (That Looks About Right). I think I'll bring that one up at our next meeting, see if anyone gets it.
