Anyone out there fly for or applied for a pilot slot in the Guard?
Just curious how it went and what kind of experience seems to be the key to earning a selection.

Prior service, college degree, flight time, turbine time, LOR's, EPR's, drivers records,AFOQT and BAT scores to come. Anything I missed? I would have prefered to know someone, I hear that is a big one.

Thanks,
C-130 hopeful

Everything you mentioned is great to have but I would say the only mandatory things are: college, pass a physical and perseverance.
Not having an "in" such as a friend or family is not that big, AFOQT as well as BAT scores matter but even low scores can be made up for. This logic applyies to most issues other than the mandatory requirements (such as vision in both eyes).
The first thing to do is make out a nice packet (talk to current members of units you wish to join), visit the unit(s) at least every couple of months and spread your seed. Shotgun those packets to at least 12-20 units and start culling from there. If you are interested, are not a total dork, somebody will pick you up. It often takes YEARS but keep at it and network with other applicants. Right now if I wanted C-130s I would talk to: Patrick, Duke, Albany, Martinsburg, RI, Martin State, Westhampton, Cheyenne, Boise, Minn, Little Rock and Atlanta. There are some units that seem to be tough such as Savannah, CO Springs and Charlotte, but remember, they get just as many slots for UPT, they just have more applicants.
Good Luck and keep posting questions.
