That has not been my experience. I find the varied backgrounds and interests of the folks I fly with far from disappointing. Part of the reason I like the airline world is because I meet some very interesting characters. If I judged my job soley on the basis of what and where I fly I would probably get a bit bored somedays. I really enjoy meeting and getting to know my fellow crewmembers. They are what keeps it fresh for me. In that regard every trip is a bit different. There are some awfully nice and interesting people out there that don't have a clue about military bearing, but they are still honest, decent people and I enjoy their company for the most part. Sorry your experience hasn't been like mine.

I’m glad you’ve had a great experience…mine hasn’t been bad though. I’m just am far more impressed with some SF bubba knocking down a door and rolling up some Hajji than with the fat airline dude working on wife number three and talking about how captains don’t get the respect they deserve, like the old days!!! I’m not impressed with how much you make, how many FA’s you’ve hogged, or how long you’ve been with a company. I’m impressed if you remember where you come from, display at least an ounce of integrity, and understand real sacrifice. Sure, the fat captain working on wife number three was funny as hell and we got along great…he’s just not as impressive as majority of those I worked with in the military.

I think it comes down to five fundamental things: 1) quality of life, 2) pay/beanies, 3) the people you rub shoulders/work with, 4) the company/management, and 5) the job itself. Not all five will be perfect (especially #4).
My neighbor took a personal leave from DAL and went back to the ANG full-time. He says the money isn't significant enough to go back to DAL. His wife has a decent job which helps.
Harry, just curious if you would give up flying altogether (even recreational) if you got a non-flying job? To me, there are not a lot of jobs out there that are that "enjoyable".

Dude…nice job with the 5 fundamentals…I like how they flow!

Yeah, I’d give up flying all together under the right circumstances. True, I enjoyed flying more in the military than I do now, but the reason I left the military wasn’t for the airline gig. I left to continue to serve in the public sector and that passion outweighs my passion for flying. Under those circumstances I could hang it up all together.
