Gotta love the -3!!!

750 hrs from July 96 to August 97. 1 shutdown & 2 precautionary landings.....

It taught me how to really fly an airplane & I couldnt ask for a better jumpstart for my career....

Thanks again TB.......

our DC-3C's were all PW 1830 powered,so were United's initial batch,American went with the Wright 1820 with the DST (Douglas Sleeper Transport). I have a buddy who owned a Wright powered 3,and he preferred it to the 1830 ships, said it was faster.

I have about 5,000 hrs and 15,000 landings in our 32 1820 powered DC-3-G202A's on North Central. We had 2 or 3 freighters toward the end and that is what I got stuck on mostly when I finally made Captain in 1967. Lots of 20 minute legs. :) On my cherry captain trip the last leg was MKE to ORD. Northeast winds 25 to 35 kts. Many hours delay for runway 4, no delay for runway 32Left. Told the brand new F/O that I was about to see if I deserved that fourth stripe. I laid a nice one on on 32L with the ailerons wrapped all the way over, the left cowl flap wide open and a ton of rudder. Tower said "nice one North Central". Turned off at T-3.

Some time we'll talk about the ice....ugh. :)

Had three shut downs in four months. One with the prop which did not feather. That was a ride in IMC. I think there is one on the ramp for sale at KOPN.

those shutdowns always seemed to come in clusters fleet wide, all would be well for weeks, months, then bang ! 3 different airplanes would feather one,and flutter down all over the map.

Flew fish of the beaches in Alaska with a DC-3.
The thing can actually get off the ground in less than 2000' at max weight, but ya need full flaps, and ya need to pull way back to force her off while she is shaking and protesting. Right around 55 to 60 knots at the edge of a stall.

That was back in my 20s, don't have balls to do it now...

Also flew 'em with pax in the Carribbean.
Like being back in the 40s with a hostess and a f/o with oil-stains on his shirt from pre-flighting the beast.

Aye, good old days.

flew her off of grass and turf a few times, just like a big Cub on steroids, fly pax in the museum C-47 that thru God's grace I get to fly these days, I like flying people, and sharing with them the glory of round engines, tailwheels, and DC-3.

Of for Winky's Flying Circus in Alaska?

1986- 1987.....Them were the days.
