i did my cfi and cfii in 17 days there, finishing may 1st.

i liked it, but didn't learn a whole lot more then i learned at riddle anways. They were very accomidating there, and the instructors were really nice. Everyone was ready to help even during their times off.

i would recommend it highly if you already have a really good concept of whats going on in the plane.

Airman

Airman has been around forever. I first learned of it when I was living in OKC. I have never heard anything bad about it. One of the examiners it has used, Bud Bricker, gave me three practicals. He is ex-FAA and was tough when he worked for it. He became a DE after he retired and always treated me fairly and professionally.

The Oklahoma City area is a great place in which to train. Yes, there is a lot of wind and crosswinds, but all the better to hone your crosswind landing skills, ground reference maneuvers, and instrument approaches. There are plenty of each kind of approaches. (I don't know if Tinker will give practice ASRs or PARs to civilian aircraft; I think sometimes it would when I was there.) IFR in the early fall is low enough to get some actual with no worries about icing. Class B training is available in DFW. For private students, the entire state is laid out in one-mile sections, north and south and east and west, with half-mile fence lines splitting many of them. Great for ground reference maneuvers; also good for pylon-eights.

Of course, Bob's Bar-b-que in Ada. I hear there's a Bob's in Norman as well.

Good luck with your training.

I'm thinking about going to airman for my CFI/II in February or early spring. Any ideas on what the weather will be like? I only have three weeks to knock it out, and don't want to get screwed by the wx.

Make sure you get a committment from them on the 3 week thing. And I don't mean over the phone "if you put in the work to get the writtens out of the way we'll get you done in ___ weeks". You'll need something in writing to keep them on it. I've been sitting around for 2 weeks waiting for my IR ride. It seems like the planes are down a lot for having their own maintenence staff...

It does seem, however, that the "Double-I's" are flying a lot. Seems like they want to run them in and out.

Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? Probably not.

I went there for my upgrade program.

Be ready to do most everything on your own. I spent far more time trying to track down an instructor to ask a question than they spent teaching it in the first place. I am not complaining about the instructors. For the most part, the instructors I had were excellent. They were just overworked. If an instructor logged less than 100 hours a month, then they had taken a vacation at some point.
The equipement was OK. When I was there, they were having regular visits by the FSDO to the maintenance dept. Dunno the story behind it, but I didn't ask either.

As far as a social life, well, I had a blast in OKC. During the summer go and catch a Redhawks game downtown. Pretty good AAA baseball and the stadium is great. If you want the hot blonds, then go to any cowboy bar and don't wear a cowboy hat or boots. They will come running. I had a bud during school that always had a different girl using this method. A word of warning....He also had a couple of black eyes too. Your choice....

If they get any indication that you are "flexible" and that you are not binded for time then you may not get the I/II course done as quickly as others. Make it known to them that you are binded for time and get on them and they will get you in and out of there quickly, money in the bank. I didn't have any problem nor did anyone else in my class... Stay on the ball, pester them, etc, do whatever it takes not to have to stay out there longer than you have to and all will be fine. Sometimes unfortunately you have to be a pain in the @ss.

I'm slowly learning that being a PITA is probably the only way to get anything done at this place. Which is a little ironic, since I have a side job at the Pita Pit in Norman....

I just moved out to Norman, OK with the ultimate goal of attending the Airman Flight School up at Westheimer Field. Right now I'm just settling in and working on getting finances, etc. in order, so I'm not starting right away, but I just would like to hear from people who are currently up there doing that, or here for the same reason. Maybe find some folks who know this area better than I do right now. Once I get a little more moved in I will take a drive up to the airport and talk to students/staff at the school.

 Oh my God..... I just drove 2,000 miles to OKLA-FRICKIN'-HOMA!!!!
